BETTER MILK FOR LONDON
Society Appeals for Funds to Carry on
Campaign for Legal Betterment
of City's Supply.
London—Contrasting the milk sup-
ply of London with tho cleaner and
more healthful milk compelled by law
In New York city, the National Clean
Blilk society is appealing for funds to
carry on a campaign for legal milk
betterment here.
The appeal says that while all Mew
York dairy herds must be free from
tubercular cattle, between 8 and !> i.<t
cent of the milk supplied in London
county contains "living tuUeroe."
While Crude A milk in New York must
not contain more than 80,(MX) bacteria
per cubic centimeter at any time be-
fore reaching this consumer, the av-
erage London sample "contains not
less than 3,000,000 bacteria per cubic
centimeter."
The society says American milk Is
bottled before it is shipped, and re-
marks that "the conduct ol' the dairy
has become a science which is prac-
tically unknown in this country to
the trade, the public or any but .in
extremely small number of public
health 'officials."
Daily Water Supply.
Experiments prove that the amount
of water consumed dally by a cow is
In direct proportion to the amount of
milk she produces.

FROM GOOD ROADS
After Improvement Price of Tillable
Lands Show Big Increase—Chil-
dren Benefited.
After Improving the main market
roads in four counties in Virginia
and one each in New York, Alabama,
Florida and Mississippi during a pe-
riod of" five years, a survey was made
of the work and Its results. It was
found that the price of tillable land
served by the roads Increased from
one to three times the total cost of the
Improvements. The total saving every
year in hauling costs due lo this Im-
provement In the roads amounts to
.$027,-100 for a traffic of about 3,500,-
000 ton miles. The net. saving on the
hauling, after deducting' the cost of
interest and principal for the improve-
ments, averages 11.0 cents per ton mile.
After the roads were better, the aver-
age attendance of children in the pub-
lic schools was 70 per cent; before tin
roads were Improved it was (ml per
<■0111. Ten more children out of every
100 were enabled to get schooling us
a result of better roads.
Dairymen Are Careful.
! Dairymen as a rule are more careful
with their cows than the average farm-
! er who merely produces the milk for
family Use.
Reasonable Truck Hauling.
I Kver.v pound of merchandise which
I can be added to the truck load makes
1 truck hauling that, much more reason-
