worker personally.
General Pershing's Inspection of the Y. M. 0. A. canteen, which was unan-|
noun ceil, took up an entire morning and he expressed himself satisfied wit
the results. At several places he surprised the men at their luncheon. At I
Palais du Glace, where 25,000 Americans oat dally, the first intimation that
diners had >yf his presence was when the orchestra played the "Star-Spangle
Banner," and they looked about to find the commander In chief of A. B.
standing at attention.
He Interrogated a number of the soldiers about the food and the price
and exhibited the most minute Interest In everything pertaining to i
welfare. At the Hotel Kachester, a Y. M. C. A. hostelry on the Bouleva
Oourelles. he learned with surprise that any private soldier cowld get
eggs for hit* breakfast. This was something generals frequently bad exper
enced difficulty In doing.
To the American women workers at the Palais du Glace he said: "I wi

It means a great deal to tht army to have the right kind of American wort®

for you, too. It gives you a new perspective on the work of men, and
the war." ,

Many people will probably wonder what proportion of the
•bout overcharging by the Y. M. C. A. can be traced to this
omission of United States currency on the lists. The "J* eent." ate
for thirty centime*, or five wnts in C...S. money. It was not a
matter for a *taok" to become confused.
