COLLEGE STATION —
Representatives from medical,
community and governmental
agencies recently met with ag-
i ■ -iltoral experts at Texas
A&M University- to discuss rec
ommendatvms for establishing
a state level task force to pre-
vent rural injuries.
"If you're a farmer in Texas,
there is one chance in five that
you will have a serious injury
this year," said Dr Gary Nel-
son. “Of course, those aren't
very good odds ”
Nelson, an agricultural safety
engineer with the Texas Ag-
ricultural Extension Service,
said statistics indicate for every
accident resulting in a fatality,
there will be 100 accidents re-
sulting in disabling injuries.
1,000 resulting in serious equip-
ment or property damage, and
1,200 resulting in serious in-
juries.
According to a 10-year study,
two thirds of the 2.000-plus fatal
rural accidents in Texas be-
tween 1966-76 were the result
of accidents involving firearms,
drowning, fire, tractor acci-
dents. falls from ladders, plat-
forms and farm machinery and
from animals
"The scope of the task force
on the prevention of rural in-
jurs would involve all aspects of
injuries in the rural setting,
including occupational, home-
related. recreational and high
wav accidents. Nelson said. “It
would involve those who live in
rural areas as well as those svho
visit them.
