j Your heart is two pumps, wqrk- I '
ling simultaneously. The left side |
of the heart pumps oxygen-laden i
blood into the big artery that takes
it to' all the organs Of the body. I
The right side of the heart re-
ceives tht blood that has been
to all these organs and comes
back impure. The blood goes into
the top of tile right side of the
heart, called the right
through a v.alve into the
of the right side of
called the right ventricle:
the right ventricle gets enough
blood to be full, it closes that valve
from the auricle above so no more
blood can come in. This Is when
you get tlie lubb sound,
Thvn the right ventricle empties !
the blood into • the pulmonary
artery, the blood vessel to the lung. .
and after the blood has left the
ventricle it closes the bottom valve; I
this is when you get the dubb
sound.
Then the right Ventricle tmpties
the blood inthe pulmonary
artery, the bloodvessel to the lung
and after the blood has left the
ventricle, Jt closes the bottom
valve;, this is when you get the
dubb sound.
The blod goes through the
lungs, leaving the carbon dioxide
there and picking up oxygen.
Then it goes over to ‘ the top of
the left side of the heart, the
left auricle, and enters the left _
ventricle from there. When the left
ventricle is full of blood, it closes
that - valve from the left auricle,
at the same time that the right
ventricle is closing its valve. If
those two valves don't cloee at the
game tinie. your doctor hears an ,
extra sound in his stethoscope, a
sound hat,can best be described
as T-lubb—dubb.
From the left ventricle the blood .
goes down into the great artery
that lodas it to the circuit of the
body and as H>e left ventricle is
emptied, you feel the reaction in
your pulse,, the* bottom valve 1

Refreshments of coffee and cook-
ies were served.
You may even pick up a watcli
with a second hand and count
the number^ of thumps you feel
in that pulse in a minute. The
average adult pulse rate is around .
72 beats per minute but averages]
also run all the way from'30 to*
90 beats, depending upon the age,
circumstances, exercise, digestion,
emotional disturbances and even
excitement snch as taking your
own pulse.
OES Members
Attend School
Of Instruction
Nine members of the Mt. Vernon
OES attended the school of in*
(.truction at Sulphur Springs. Mon-
day, Nov. 13. Two A certiflcite*
and six B certificates were award-
ed
just lef. Sometimes they don't do
.it and sometimes • they don't open
las wide as thry're supposed to,
Worming an obstruction for the
free flow of blood. When the blood
seeps back into the auricle or
venyjicle, is usually adds a "grrr"
sound lubb dubb in the
stethoscope. A valve that doesn’t
'open wide enough will end up as
a ''Ffff" or blowing sound.
i So you can see there are all kinds
of different versions of melodies
that your heart can beat out.
Some • of the valuations from the
basic beat can mean trouble- and
— " •• some don't mean much of any-
around at 'thing. They all call for a more
tried through check of the heart’ of
yaur., doctor {course.
One of the standard methods of
checking the heart’ is the taking
of the blood pressure. Your doctor
pumps air into that cuff around •
your arm until he hears no sound
I from the stethoscope he's applied
just below that cuff. Then he
starts letting the air • out. When
|the air goes out, the .column of
.mercury in the bpx by your arm
rtarts going down. At the moment
(that the doctor hears a
click in -the stethoscope he
what the reading is on
'mercury column. That is. roughly]
. peaking..-the. highest pressure at {
which blood flows through your ,
vessels. . , |
Your doctor,..keeps listening until
,.„.j is no more noise in the L
(stethoscope and notices at what
point the mercury '"column'"stands 1
when the sound dies out.
