received less than $400,000 in state funds
vs more than SI million several years ago
The new state legislation regarding a ci-
ty's power to annex for limited purpose will
hopefully release some of the property
along our roadways for development
Despite the city of Austin's efforts to
discourage development and grow th to the
western Hill Country areas, growth has still
transpired
Growth can't be ignored The tacts as
they are must be accepted and the options
available must be examined Realistic
discussion and cixiperalive efforts from the
private and public sectors are the necessary
components to direct and achieve a healthy
development and stable growth

1988 is not a good vintage for presidential candidates, whichever
way a voter might be leaning. Neither candidate sparks a lot of
confidence in any but the most devout party follower, and the
campaigns have ranged from boring to nasty.
In a year when more Travis County residents have registered
to vote than ever before, and in greater numbers than any other
metropolitan area in the state, there is an awful lot of apathy about
the election. The average citizen has the feeling, “Why bother?,”
or so it would seem from casual conversations in the last few
weeks, and there are many who are considering not voting at all.
That’s unfortunate. Voting is one of our greatest rights — just
ask anybody in one of those countries where elections have been
“temporarily” suspended or where there is only one candidate
to choose from. And it’s more than the thought expressed in Scott
Jackson’s cartoon today — we don’t vote just so we have the right
to complain — although certainly the person who doesn't vote
forfeits the right to complain about the way things turn out.
No, there’s more to voting than that. Voting gives us a chance
to have our say — about the direction things are going, or the
need for a new direction. We can “vote the rascals out”
(whoever’s tn right now) or, just possibly, vote new rascals in,
but at least we have some say in the matter. Our vote is our voice.
So speak up Tuesday. Vote.

When I decided to start writing a column
for Bee Cave and the surrounding areas. I
vowed to stay away from political issues.
I will leave those issues to the professional
reporters of the Pifew and the
American-Statesman.
However. I feel it appropriate to convey
to the public some interesting facts that per-
tain to issues like taxes, water and a master
plan.
Unfortunately, in small communities like
ours, most of the information conveyed is
communicated through the so-called
grapevine. Like any grapevine, some of the
grapes are sour. Even though the sour
grapes are the minority, they none the less
make more of an impression than the sweet
ones
Here are some facts pertaining to grow th
