For a society editor here:
rhursday is that day of the week
that flies up and hits her in the
face, the day that can bring on
an attack of appoplexy compli-
cated with hysteria and that
headachy feeling Fur that is
the day when she must make up
her page for the Sunday edition
About 20 Sunday pages each
year are picture pages For this
type the pictures must be on
tiand by Thursday, or she must
know, positively and beyond any
doubt, that they will be ready
by Friday, the day when the
whole second section must go to
the printer. News of women's
clubs and organizations go in the
first section only if it is turned
in too iate for the second sec-
tion, and then only if there are
some vacant spaces that need
to toe filled
The society editor also does
the courthouse records on Fri-
day afternoon, and the hospital
report and obituaries on Satur-
day morning So there is very
little lime to write club reports
and such after Friday at noon

rule that, for some strange rea-
son the Thursday paper must
t* filled also, so news cannot
be "hoarded.” This means that
when the time comes for plan
ning the Sunday page that is not
a picture page, it must be done
usually with what comes in be-
tween Wednesday noon and
Thursday afternoon A page of
this sort contain* about four
pictures and about SR inches of
type The average club report
is four to five inches long
Unless there is a wedding or
long feature story, it is extreme-
ly difficult to fill that much
space Feature stories require
hours of research and must be
planned in advance of the dread
day Often then there are large
gaping is .les that the editor
must simply hope will be filled
as the day advance*.
