STATE DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WELFARE SOARO MEnER JOHN H. WINTERS " R COMMISSIONER BURTON G HACKNEY J WELDON WATSON CHAIRMAN. BROWNFIELt ASST TO THE WILL BOND COMMISSIONER VFCE-CHAIRMAN. HILLSBORO . r W. KENDALL BAKER MEMBER - HOUSTON AUSTIN 14, TEXAS July 12, 1961 Honorable Truett Latimer, Member The Texas House of Representatives Capitol Station Austin, Texas Dear Mr. Latimer: This is a follow-up on my recent letter to you concerning the denial of the Old Age Assistance grant of Mrs. Beulah 0. Van Etten of 1542 North 18th Street, Abilene. It seems that Mrs. Van Etten had lived for many years as a member of her brother and sister-in-law's family on her mother's 200 acre ranch. Allher needs were met by the family with the exception of personal needs, such as, incidentals and clothing, which totalled $10.50 a month. A few months ago Mrs. Van Etten moved into her daughter's home where, again, all her needs are being met by the family with the exception of the small personal items. In the meantime, she has moved a house onto a lot which she owns in Abilene and is receiv- ing $75 per month rental from the house with payments on the property of $55.50 monthly. The net income resulting therefrom of $19.50 more than meets her personal needs. There is still another factor in that her equity in the Abilene property is such as to render her ineligible. I, therefore, regret to inform you that I do not believe there is any legal way in which this agency may be of assistance to Mrs.Van Etten at this time. Yours very truly, inters JHW:tc
