PEP SQUAD-FOOTBALL
BOYS HELD FRIDAY
The annual Aspermont Sl'gh
School pep squad-football ban-
quet was held Friday evening in
the high school study ha1.],
which was converted into a win-
ter wonderland with its cedar
and lights and snow scene, and
the beau/tifully-decoiiated Christ-
mas tree.
Table decorations featured the
Christmas theme. Quartet lables
were covered in white and cen-
tered with a tall red toper,
surrounded by evergreens, bells
and mistletoe. The focoJ point ■

and holly. Real pine and col - |
ored pine cones and holly ex- '
tended the entire length of the
table. Tall red candles gleamed
from their mounds of mistletoe

ton Gardner, high school prin-
cipal, introduced the speaker of i

pociate football coach of Hardin- 1
Simmons University. Mr. Baugh'f
talk delighted his audience os he
interspersed good rules of con-
tkfc't and living, with witty-
jokes.
Coach Cotton presented
trophies to: .'Jim Ward, outstand-
ing freshman; Louis Dodson,
best back; John Bevies, best
tackle, and Dale Thornton, best
sport.
Awards Presented
Mrs. Ward presented mega-
phones from the pep squad to
the two senior leaders: Sammie
Rader and Barbara Sparks; and
batons to the senior majorettes:
Shirley Mullis, Jnnelle Perry,
and Helen Cooper. Gifts were
also presented to the three other
seniors: Wanda Anderson. Thel-
ma Wilson and Lue Smith.
Helen Cooper, football queen
for 1953, and Wayne Mason. jx p
squad hero, were presented en-
graved footballs.
John L Boyles, Hornet co-
csptain, presented Mr Cotton a
dozen golf balls, a golf carrier
and trousers, and a shirt from
the football team members.
Shirley Mullis, pen sqir-ri drum
major, presented Mrs: Ward a
lovely aqua knit dress and ear

Mrs. Ward, pep squad spon-

win. Jerre Cooper and Shirley
Hulsey tied for high point hon-
ors, with five points each. Next
was Dorothy Clark with four
points. It was a very hnrd-
fought game. At the half, the
Rotan lassies were leading, 10-9
And at the end of the third
quarter, the score was all tied
up. 14-14 Then the local girls
pulled it out for their third win
in four starts. Their only loss
is to the Rule girls.
The Aspermont boys lost their
second p-me in four starts, by
a score of 44-39 The score v.\'!~
2.3 to L'-l at the ha!f. with the
Hornets leading. The Yellow-
hammers from Rotan came alive
in the third quarter to take a
38-30 lead Neither Rotan nor
Aspermont did much scoring in
the final quarter, but Rotan kept
enough points ahead to win.
High point for the local boys
was Rob Rutherford with 13
points Dale Thornton was next
with nine points. The Hornets
only other loss is to the Ham-
lin team.
The boys and girls both go to
tournaments tonight (Thursday)
with the boys *oing to Roby,
and the jdrls going to JLeuders.
Then on December 29 (after the
holidays), the Aspermont teams
will play hosts for return
game? with Rule.

Mrs. Julia Lawrence received
word last Tuesday that one of
her daughter-in-laws, Mrs. Ru-
fus Haines, had j ssed away in
Las Vegas, Nevada. Mr. and
Mrs. Clifford Haines of Abilene
attended the funeral in the Ne-
vada city on December 10. and
i S'undi y morning, Mr. and Mrs.
I Haines came by and visited with

• that they saw plenty of snow
up where it really gets cold in
the winter.
