The fall fire season is here
again. The dread of fire is al-
ways present end its destruc-
tive power is always visible
throughout the countryside.
A fire must have fuel and
oxygen to burn. With the in-
crease of either, the fire be-
comes large. Add to this for-
mula the factor of “neglect or
carelessness” and you have an
uncontrollable destruc 11 v e
iP weapon.
This year an abundance of
dry forage has been left on
the land. Caution would be
used to prevent wildfires from
destroying this extra grass that
has been left on the land.
Fire, like the atom, can be
a useful tool if proper pre-
cautions are taken. All burn-
ing should be done when there
is little or no wipd, usually
late evening.
Landowners who have pine
plantations should make sure
an adequate firelane is con-

lanes in the early fall and seed
the area to vetch or oats. This
will provide winter feed for
wildlife.
Of course, the preventive
measure of a firelane is no
‘he end of the fire danger. It
takes every person doing his
part. This includes the urban
people as well as rural resid-
ents. Remember what Smokey
Bear says: “Only YOU can
prevent forest fires.”
