From Mrs. W. F. Tolleson,
Sparteaburg, SC: 1 remember
many things as a girl growing up
in South Carolina. I remember
well the great “flu” epidemic we
had in the winter of 1917-18. Our
family and one other family es-
caped having it. So we had to go
out and help our neighbors who
were sick. So many died from it.
My father would go into homes
where there were deaths and try
to help take care of them. 1 also
remember we hsd about six
weeks of Ice on the ground esch
winter, so we did a lot of ice
skating. The schools were closed
most of the winter months.
From Eva Martin, Lampeter,
PA: When I was a little girl I re-
member how we always had a
scouring day. We had lots of tin
ware In those days and knives
and forks that had to be scoured
A big table was set out in the
yard on a nice day in spring with
plenty of sunshine. The tin ware
was scoured with ashes, then
rinsed and left on the table to dry
in the sun. The knives and forki
were scoured weekly
