Is it possible to feel safer
standing in the same building
with a nuclear reactor than at
home.
According to the statistical pic-
ture, you are safer at a nuclear
reactor site than in your own
home.
Accidents rated the number
three kille,. in the nation and
number four killer in Texas, oc-
cur more than 50 percent of the
time in or about tho home.
The atomic industry, on the
other hand, has one of the na-
tion's best safety records.
With such a potent power at
hand, scientists have built in
safety device upon safety de-
vice—surrounding nuclear pow-
er sites with tons of water,
walls of the densest brick, lead
shields and sensitive monitoring
systems routinely checking all
personnel.
Recently, a group of top men
in the field got together to study
and learn the "what if" about
nuclear accidents. The Texas
State Department of Health's Di-
vision of Occupational Health
and Radiation Control and the
Public Health Service sponsored
the week's course.
Texas, through the Health De-
partment, is one of eight states
in the nation authorized by the
Atomic Energy Commission to
oversee its own radiation contlpo
program.
These nuclear guardian re-
sponded to two tests of their op-
erational readiness recently.
On the first occasion, health
officials received a call that s
radium needle, used for medica!
purposes, was missing. They
went to work immediately.
After some thorough, but ra-
pid. detective work the ininut€
radioactive needle was discov-
ered several miles from the ori-
ginal site in a large garbage con-
tainer in route to a building
materials factory.
The other episode was a local
scare, triggered by a frightened
woman who misread a home A-
diation - detection device. This
scare was checked out and the
community reassured within
minutes of its origin.
Feel safer? You ought fo.
These experts are watching over
your health — radiologically —
