BY TH. OLD TIMOR
From Mrs. Mary B. Mobley.
Colorado Spring*. CO: I remem-
ber several things about World
War I. even though I wa* only 7
year* old in 1014. The ration
book* were brown with coupon*,
the *hort item* were sugar and
flour. At thia time most people
baked their own bread. When-
ever white flour was purchased an
equal amount of other flour had
to be bought. Once my mother
baked a loaf of bread with rice
flour - it just rose and then ran
all over the oven, ao it made no
bread. Since there waa only a
small amount of sugar available,
we had no cakes.
We heard new* of the war from
the newspaper* and “extras” or
by word of mouth or over the
telephone Once on the street car
the very impressive preaident of
our local college stood up and
announced that Antwerp had fall-
en. I felt the chill that went over
the crowd
Early in November of 1018
there were falae rumor* of peace
and bell* rang and horna beeped,
but Anally we were told by an
“extra" that the Armlatice had
been signed and for ua the war
wa* over. I wa* turpriaed with a
real birthday cake in December

Don’t waste it — use it for

(like peat moss) gives all new
plants a good start and adds a
fertile boost to established
plants too
Prepare beds for roses
which will be dug after the
first frosts — don't move or
buy any yet because they will
sprout out now and be killed
when cold weather comes.
Fruit and nut trees also will
be dug after they have gone
dormant and the sap has gone
down with advent of cold
weather. If the ground is
prepared with fertilizer and
peat moss now it will take
only a few minutes to set them
out when they arrive. Dwarf
fruit trees only take up as
much room as a crepe myrtle
bush so think of using them as
plant screens in the back and
