city tradition since 1962 when sewer workers used
green dye to check for sewer discharges and had the
idea to turn the river green for Saint Patrick’s Day.
Originally 100 pounds of vegetable dye was used to
turn the river green for a whole week but now only
forty pounds of dye is used and the color only lasts
for several hours. The main canal in Indianapolis,
Indiana is dyed green. In Savannah, Georgia down-
town city fountains are also turned green. Jamestown,
New York, enjoys the day by dying the Chadakoin
River green each year.
Many legends are associated with St. Patrick. The
symbol of the shamrock used for St. Patrick’s Day
1
comes from the story of St. Patrick using the sham-
rock to illustrate the Holy Trinity, the Father, the
Son and the Holy Ghost. The three-leafed plant coin-
cided with the Pagan religion’s sanctity of the num-
ber three and is the root of the green color theme.
Leprechauns are often used in relation to St. Patrick’s
Day because a leprechaun is an Irish symbol of good
luck. Leprechauns have been in Ireland for millions
of years. They are not used in relation with any other
country
Another popular belief is that St. Patrick removed
the snakes from Ireland. The story says that while
St. Patrick was fasting, snakes attacked him, so he
chased all snakes into the ocean. However, there have
never been snakes in Ireland during the post-glacial
period.

dogs, talking about the history of the event; it’s just a
really great time for everyone involved. We even have
Buster Bounds bringing his drone to fly around.
“Usually there are around 50 kids that show up. We
have a really engaged group of high school students
who are very involved in the function. We really hope
parents will bring their kids out and see what the
entire event has to offer.
The greenwing event is being offered at no charge.
All participants will receive a a green wing member-
ship. Kids 12 and under will receive a free subscrip-
tion to the DU Puddler magazine and kids 13 and
older will receive a regular DU membership. “We
have so much support from the community and it has
been such a success since it’s start,” said Thomas.
“We are excited for another year.
