(In effect Dec. 7,1890.)
Double Daily Train Service,
A GOOD SCHEME.
The attention of the Live Oak club and
the advertising committee is respectfully
called to the following excerpt from the
Eort Worth Gazette. Although the iden-
tity of the gentleman is veiled, Evening
Tribune thinks it discovers the hand of
General Cameron, who first suggested
and carried to successful completion the
Spring Palace at Fort Worth. Be that as
it may, however, there is practical sense
in the suggestions made and Galveston
should take a hand in the proposed ex-
cursion. No matter if the plan does em-
brace a visit to all parts of the state by
the excursionists, Galveston has nothing
to fear from competing points if people
' can be induced to come to the city and
judge for themselves. In speaking of the
matter this gentleman said:
“Let us have the chamber of com-
merce send a man to Denver to make ex-
cursion terms with the Union Pacific and
Denver and Gulf; to Chicago to make ar-
rangements with the Santa Fe, and to St.
Louis to make arrangements with the
Missouri Pacific for excursions to Texas,
to be an “investigation excursion,” with
tickets that cannot be scalped. The plan
is this: We will take first the Santa Fe
system, and will go into every town be-
tween Chicago and Topeka, hold meet-
ings and have the people select persons
they believe in. to come with us and look
at Texas.

Texas, the greatest state in the union,
offers more inducements for home seek-
ers, capitalists and investors than any
other state in the union. Those who
doubt it should come and see. Seeing is
believing, and “the proof of the pudding
is in chewing the string.”
The home-seeker, who is looking for a
place to locate where he and his family
can have the benefit of good schools, fine
churches, refined and intelligent society,
with a climate unsurpassed for health and
salubrity, need go no farther than Gal-
veston. She has them all.
The quarantine against Houston has
been raised in as far as State Health Of-
ficer Rutherford can do it, which act
sustains Evening Tribune’s position
that it never should have been declared.
Galveston’s “big sister” will now be per-
mitted to keep open house.
In Galveston, city and county, storms
of sleet and ice are unknown. The verd-
ure retains its spring and summer as-
pect the year ’round; roses and olean-
ders bloom in January, and vegetables
are gathered fresh from the ground dur-
ing ten months in the year.
When you are preparing to give an
order to “the butcher, the baker, or the
candlestick maker,” cast your eyes over
the columns of your home papers and
place your orders with the men -who ad-
vertise. You will always find a liberal
dealer who will give you full value for
your money if you pursue this course,
The resources adjacent to and directly
tributary to Galveston are sufficient to
make her the metropolis of the gulf coast
without taking into consideration her
seaport advantages, no other city pos-
sesses. The establishment of the Pan-
American steamship line, which is now
but a mere question of time, will make
her the great entrepot and distributing
point for the products of the Central and
South American states and her custom
house entries and clearances will soon,
like that of her bank clearances, push
Galveston’s name to the head of the list.

A short time since Austin announced
that its advertising committee had se-
cured the services of the irrepressible
“John Howard, Of and For Texas,” aud
was headed for glory and population
with her check rein down. But there’s
many a slip between the cup and the lip,
and the aforesaid John turns up in Fort
Worth with a half-page “ad” ifi the Ga-
zette announcing his readiness to squan-
der ony city’s cash that may fancy it
needs his services. Professional boomers
come high, and John is a gilt-edged one,
but what’s the matter with Austin? Did
John clean out the exchequer at one fell
swoop? ■
CURRENT COMMENT. > - .
Waco News: “Another Bubble Burst -
ed” is the headline of an editorial in the
Fort Worth Gazette, and the article pro-
ceeds as follows: “General Booth’s Sal-
vation Army bubble has bursted and the
million that he was to receive for use
among the poor in ‘darkest England’ has
taken wings and flown away.’’ The sen-
timent is good enough, but it is the
grammar that attracts What does
“bursted” mean? There is no such
word in any accepted lexicon. Burst is
the participle past of burst, and “burst-
ed” is a word invented by ignorance.
Now listen for the reverberating roar of
the wave of wrath that will envelope the
News like a winding sheet. To tax the
Gazette with ignorance 1 What presump-
tion! What the Gazette doesn’t know
isn’t worth knowing—in its opinion.
The most beautiful frontispiece ever
produced in an American magazine, ap-
pears in the January number of the Cos-
mopolitan. It is a reproduction in colors
of Francois Flameng’s famous picture,
“The Cake Seller,” and can scarcely be
distinguished from the imported photo- Wons. Manager,
gravure which is exhibited in the dealers’
windows, at the price of $7 a copy. It is
one of the most charming of subjects,
and is well worth framing and preserva-
tion. The Cosmopo'itan has become
noted of late for its frontispieces and this
very much excels its previous efforts.
Fort Worth Gazette: The boys in blue
seem to be making good Indians of many
of the redskins.
And at the same time how many of the
“ boys in blue ” have yielded their lives
as a sacrifice to the rapacity and robbery
of little Benny’s Indian agents, who have
caused the outbreak by their frauds and
corruption.
San Antonio Times: A thirty mile gap
in a certain railroad project prevents San
Antonio from becoming the largest man-
ufacturing center in the south.
And a 150 mile gap betweeri Yuma and
San Diego prevents Galveston from hav-
ing the shortest railway connection be-
tween the Atlantic and Pacific and yet
she doesn’t seem to care about securing
its building, while San Diego is howling
herself hoarse for its construction.

Dallas Times-Herald: Fort Worth is
now luxuriating in the first real boom
she has enjoyed for many a day. The
Dallas jail being overcrowded, it became
necessary to remove nine federal pris-
oners to Pantherville. All is hilarity in
the abode of the tiger now. The com-
missioners’ court is considering the ad-
visability of renewing the reward of $1 a
head for wolf scalps, and, taking the two
booms together, a new era is about to
dawn upon the village thirty miles west
of us. The Mail cogitates thusly : “The
Tarrant county jail will hereafter be used
for the confinement of United States
prisoners for this federal district. All
things work together to show that Fort
Worth is the metropolis of North Texas.”
Grow, increase and multiply; fill your
jails and poorhouses, while the capitalist
and investor invests his shekels in Gal-
veston . j
