AUSTIN—Air pollution is tli
prime topic of conservation i
the Capitol at the moment.
After taking a look at the air
pollution law just put on the books
this year, members of the new
Texas Air Control Board say the
Texas law perir.iis 80 times a-
much air pollution as do similai
laws in some of the other states.
Elbert Hooper of Austin, the
Board's attorney, told the direc-
tors that an exemption from con-
trol supposed to apply only to
cotton gins 'limiting air emis-
sions to a maximum of eight per
cent of the- process weight ft! any
agricultural product i may exempt
many industries.
He named the following as pos-
sibles: lumber mills, rice mills,
grain elevators, paper mills, cot-
ton oil mills, produce plants,
food processing gnlants, citrus pro
cessine plants, cotton seed <fe-
linting plants, flour mills, soybean
oil mills, corn syrup plants,
slaughter houses, wool scouring
plants, out processing plants and.
possiblv, rendering plants,
"We might ps well fold up and
en home." said Board Member
Henry LeBlanc of Port Arthur.
"Mavbe it would be easier for
you to tell us what's left that we
can control," he told Hooper.
Some members observed that
cotton gins would have to
produce 50,000 to 60,000 micro-
grams of particulate matter to
get to eight per cent eoncentra-
4>on—and gins at best are not
likely to exceed 40,000 to 50,000
micrograms

THE COURT SPEAKS—Soeony
Mobil Oil Co. Inc. of Midland will
have to bear the burden of a
$167,789 judgment for damages to
equipment owned by two New
Mexico firms because the State
Supreme Court has affirmed an
appeals court decision. Damages
resulted from an oil field fire
| which started while a Mobil well
near Seminole, in Gaines County,
was being acidized.
High court also ruled that an
applicant who Is denied a beer

granting of the license has no
