THIS WEEK'S SCHEDULE
SATURDAY. FEBRUARY 1
Panola at Northmt, 6 pan.
each other this season.
Not that Panola 91, San Jacinto
89 in overtime wasn't hard enough
here Wednesday night.
It wasn't settled until Nicole
Daniel drove around two San Jac
defenders and hit a shot from point-
blank range with 0:02 remaining.
She was fouled, converted on the
free throw and finally the Fillies
could be assured of their only other
win in TEC action this season. The
loss kept San Jacinto winless in
each of its six conference outings.
"How did she do it?" Panola
coach Dennis Smith asked. "When
I saw her start to the hole and 1 saw
two girls in her path, I never would
have believed she was going to
make the goal. I'm surprised she
got a chance to shoot a free throw
on a play like that. Usually the of-
ficials will let it go in the final sec-
onds when the game's on the line.”
Actually, Daniels met only to-
ken resistance, especially from the
first defender. The Fillies' freshman
went around her opponent like she
was sitting still.
Near the basket she was chal-
lenged, went up and shot a jumper
in-your-face and was contacted as
the ball was leaving her hand. It
never wavered up and in.
It had been a long, hard strug-
gle.

On a scale of one to 10. the
cheerleaders' sign and Henderson's
defense were about equal
Carthage ran through them both
here Tuesday as it secured at least a
share of the 16-AAAA champi-
onship, with minimal difficulty.
Carthage 10, Sign 1.
Lady Bulldogs 64, Lady Lions
42.
"Once we got past the sign, the
game went pretty well," Carthage
coach Beth Jesurun said, noting
that one of her 11 squadmen,
Brandie Ingram, fell during the
run-through before introductions.
It took more than a half for
Carthage to solve Henderson's de-
fensive strategy, but once Jesurun
got her perimeter shooters into an
attack mode, the Lady Lions were
easy prey.
"Henderson tried to take away
both post players and make every-
one else score. We really stepped it
up (after halftime) and knocked 'em
down."
Carthage had just a 33-27 half-
time lead, but that changed quickly
in the third sjanza when Tanya
Wallace, Alyssa Leffall and La-
Johna Carter began to find the
range. Soon the Lady Dogs were
ahead 47-31.
"Once we got a lead, we kind of
let off," Jesurun noted of play in
the second quarter.
Once they pulled away in the
second half there was no letting up, ‘ "* “
however. They out scored Hender-
son, 17-11, in the final stanza to
more than double the Lions' dto-
fore halftime.
Allison was held scoreless in the
last half, however, and finished
Ingram, Crista Giles, Brandi
Mitchell and Tanya Wallace.
"1 really appreciate all the sup-
port we get from our parents, fans,
faculty and administration, and I
know the girls do, too," Jesurun
said.
"Our seniors do a great job and
we will miss them next season.
They are really a special group of
talented young ladies."
Carter and Wallace scored in
double figures with 13 and 11
points, respectively. So did junior
Kim Wall with 13, and sophomore
post Sholanda Pipkin with 10.
Sophomore Alyssa Leffall had nine
rebounds and seven points.
Carter, Leffall and Pipkin car-
ried the Lady Dogs in the early
going as they put Henderson be-
hind, 19-7. The Lady Lions got
nine points from Kia Allison in the
second quarter and won the period,
20-14, to make it a game again be-
