FIFTY YEARS AGO
(May 22 , 1919)
On next Saturday, May 24th
there will be held an election for four
amendments to our State Constitu-
tion.
Mrs. N. G. Rollins received a
special invitation to deliver the bac-
calaureate address at the Texas
Woman's College at Fort Worth next
week. We not, only congratulate
Mrs. Rollins as having been their
preference, but we also congratu-
late the class upon their selection
of a speaker, as they could not have
done better if they had looked the
state over.
TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO
(May 24 , 1 944)
The graduating exercises for the
Aspermont High School will be held
on Friday evening in the auditorium.
Barbara Right was adjudged the
class valedictorian and Harlan Boyd
Freeman salutatorian.
According to figures on file in
Stonewall County ACA office farm-
ers have purchased five cars of
government wheat during the last
12 months.
"Let's give our cookers a real
cleaning.., " said Miss Winona
Schultz in giving a demonstration
on cleaning cookers to the Swenson
Home Demonstration Club on May
17 at the home of Mrs. Olen Godfrey.

School closing events for the
Peacock school have been announced
by Supt. W. C. Robertson as follows:
Baccalaureate services Sunday
May 22, 11 a. m. at the Peacock
Baptist Church.
The Aspermont Soft Ball entry
in the Brazos Valley League has got
off to a very good start in unofficial
play, scoring 40 points to 25 for
the opposition in six games.
According to information re-
ceived this week from M.S. Jones,
secretary of the Stonewall County
ACA, farmers crop acreage reports
for the year 1945 through 1949 are
scheduled to be completed by May
20, 1949.

The 1959 graduating class of
Aspermont High School will hold
its baccalaureate services in the
high school auditorium on Sunday,
May 24th, at 8:00 p.m.
Commencement exercises, set
for Tuesday night. May 26th will be
held in the auditorium at 8:00.
Glenda Galloway will give the
valedictorian's message. Rebecca
Hoy will give the salutatory address.
High ranking boy. Bill Martin, will
give the welcome.
The Stonewall - Kent Singing
Group will meet in Swenson, May
31st, at 2:00 p.m., it has been an-
nounced. Everyone is extended a
cordial invitation to attend.
Fullback Pete Hart, considered
as one of the finest football players
in the history of Hardin-Simmons
University, has been named as one
of the school's top two outstanding
athletes this year.
Hart, the son of Mr. and Mrs.
Lawson Hart of Aspermont, was
handed the honor last week during
the school's fourth annual all —let—
terman's banquet in Rose Field
House.
Hewas named to the All-Border
Conference footbal 1 team after
ranking first in the conference and
fourth in the nation in rushing. He
tied basketball star Doyle Edmiston
for the outstanding athlete honor,
which annually goes to the school's
best performer.

moved up to the Agricultural
Department in 1966.
Cochran was presented the
award for his outstanding
work with the FFA Students.
A plaque was also presented
to Travis Boyd, minister of
the Aspermont Church of
Christ, for being the out-
standing school booster.
Mr. Lilly told the young
people to "choose one thing
that they wanted to improve
In and work toward that goal,
and not to give up until they
accomplished it."

Resigns First
Baptist Pastorate
The Rev. Dnrold C. Bald-
win, pastor of the First Bap-
tist Church resigned Sunday
morning. May 18.
Rev. Baldwin will be at-
tending the Southwestern
Baptist Theological Seminary
In Fort Worth working on his
masters degree.
He has been pastor here
since Februray of ]968, com-
ing to Aspermont from Brown-
field where he had been since
3965.
Baldwin and his wife Anita
are both graduates of West
Texas State University. They
have two children, Toye Diane
and David Byron.
His resignation is effective
Sunday, May 25.

Ray, Robert Branch, and Don*
nie Fraser.
Baccalaureate Services for
the class were held Sunday
evening with Travis Boyd,
minister of the Church of
Christ, delivering the sermon.
Awards Presented During Spring
Music Festival to Top Students
Aspermont High Concert
Band, along with the Fifth
and Six Grade, and the Ton-
ette bands, presented their
annual Spring Music Festival
Thursday evening.
The bands were under di-
rection of Russell Fuller, band
director.
Named most valuable senior
was Karon Paschal, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. O. W„ Ellis.
She received this award for
her leadership ability and co-
operation She served as sec-
retary and reporter.
Karon played in the stage
band and was Drum Major.
Grace Hoy, a junior, was
named most valuable under
classman. She is the daughter
of Mr, and Mrs. Raymond Hoy.
Grace was given this award
lor her ability to cooperate.
Mr. Fuller said that she was
always willing to change in-
struments as was needed She
also has leadership ability.
Grace has won medals at
the solo and ensembel contest
and tried out for •all-region
band. She is a membct of the
stage band.
The drum major and twir-
lers for '69-70 wore named.
They are Barbara Jean Howell,
drum major; head majorette
T-ynn Ward; twirlcrs, Sue
King, Carla Lambert., and
Brenda McDowell.
A reception followed the
ronccrt and was hosted by
the Band Booster Club.
