We live in a stress saturated
world. Occasionally we experience
a whole week of blue Mondays and
daydream of escaping to some
hideaway for relaxation.
What are the methods used to
deal with life's pressures? Some use
drugs and alcohol. Byofeedback,
hypnosis and Transcendental Med-
itation are a few more recent tech-
niques offering ways of escape.
Before trying any escape tech-
nique, it's wise to look for hidden
dangers and faulty assumptions.
Those advocating the modem
methods assume all stress is bad.
This is not so. Without some stress
we would die, because stress often
alerts us to certain things that need
correcting. Excessive stress is what
we must learn to control.
Here are some guidelines to
dealing with stress adapted from

Always do what is right.

V getting up early or going for a brief
walk.
Slow down. Practice moving
more slowly. Slow your speech
when you talk and your pace when
you walk. Eat with slower move-
ments, putting down your fork
between bites. When you move
more slowly you feel less pres-
sured.
Talk things over. A friend, rela-
tive, pastor or professional coun-
selor can often help you see things
that are unclear otherwise. Don't be
afraid to turn to these outside
sources for help.
A wise man of old gives another
dimension in dealing with stress: i
"Case your cares on the Lord, and
he will sustain you" (Psalm 55:22
NTV).
Do not expect all problems to
vanish like the morning fog by
practicing these guidelines. Not all
stressful situations can be
eliminated, but these guidelines
will give strength for living
victoriously each day.
