The fourth annual Keith Steptbe
Club, organizers have announced.
The two-man scramble is lim-
ited to the first 36 paid teams. En-
try fee is $40 per person, including
green fee and lunch. Entry deadline
is April 12.
"We are excited this year to
once again host this tournament," a
family member said.
"Tltis event is a benefit golf
tournament in which proceeds will
be used to support several scholar-
ships at Carthage High School and
a large donation that will be made
to the Leukemia Society of Amer-
ica."
Keith was the son of Bill and
Wynell (Marshall) Steptoe. He ac-
quired leukemia in 1992 at the age
of 27, and passed away shortly
thereafter.
Keith grew up in Carthage,
graduated from Carthage High
School and was well known by
most residents, of the city. His
untimely death was a difficult time
for family and friends, whose joint
efforts to make something positive
out of a negative situation resulted
in this charity tournament.
Last year's event was extremely
successful. In Keith's name, three
$750 scholarships were given,
along with the donation to the
Leukemia Society.
"This golf tournament is a bene-
fit tournament, and it is intended to
provide a way for those who want
to be involved, not only to have a
good time, but to be a part of
something very positive! The suc-
cess we have will be a result of the
support of the community," a fam-
ily member notes.
Other sponsorships are solicited v
for the event, including:
(1) For a $60 donation, a sign
will be made and displayed on the
course designating a business or an
individual as Hole Sponsor.
(2) Tournament sponsorships
are available for $25 to businesses
or individuals who will have their
names posted at the tournament site
to recognize contributions. ♦
(3) Donations of time would
also be greatly appreciated.

ferred Sales Agency, 316 W.

Tournament entry forms are also
available from the above persons,
or contact Bill Steptoe at Steptoe's
Jewelry.

right, only this time . the Dawgs
gambled. Brandon Jones made a
great throw and O'Neal was out in a
close play to end the game. Mar-
shall had two double plays in the
last three innings.
It improved Marshall's record to
9-4 and avenged an earlier 5-1 loss
to the Dawgs in the Hallsville
Tournament.
It was rather funny to read Mar-

MARSHALL - Carthage ace
Derek Brewster hurled a two hitter
in a dandy pitchers duel here Tues-
day, but unfortunately the Dawgs
weren't up to the occasion in other
areas of the game, notably defense
and offense, as they lost for the
first time this season, 5-0, to Mar-
shall.
The Mavericks knocked only
three balls out of the infield, in-
cluding the two hits and a long fly
for £n out in the sixth inning, but
then it didn't take much to end
Carthage's 10-game win streak._
In the second, Casey Blalock
singled sharply in a leadoff role
and was quickly moved to second
on a sacrifice. Brewster walked the
next batter and uncorked a wild
pitch before Casey Parker collected
an RBI with an infield out Mike
Drennon rolied a grounder up the
middle to drive in another run and
the Mavs had all they needed with
a 2-0 lead.
Ip the fifth. Brewster walked
Justin Kirkland and the Mavs had
Parker and Drennon to lay down
sacrifice bunts. Neither travelled
more than 10 feet and catcher Eric
Brewster was on top of both in a
heart beat, but made consecutive
high, wild throws to first base to let
in two runs. Another scored on a
wild pitch.
> Meanwhile, Marshall's Billy
Clark had the Dawgs on a leash,
mixing speeds and pitches and
keeping the ball near the strike
zone in every inning.
* He retired the first 11 batters
without incident and through five
innings allowed just two singles.
Eric Brewster broke up the streak
with a two-out hit in the fourth and
Clark fanned Derek Brewster to
end the rally.
In the fifth, Justin O'Neal sin-
gled and Carthage pqt on a hit-and-
Ain. WhdnJuBiKoss ripped a shot
up the middle, shortstop Drennon
was on his way to cover second and
the ball came right to him to start
an easy double play.
In the top of the sixth, Clark
fanned two batters before Luke
