do. It usually comes out
as an innocent remark
overheard by the wrong
person. You're at the
repair shop and tell the
mechanic you want
your car road-ready for
next week's trip. Who in
the waiting room is lis-
tening? A burglar can
take a quick glance at a
repair order to get your
address, and then wait
for the signs that you've
left town. A bank teller
selling you travelers
checks starts a friendly
discussion about vaca-
tions and you say you
never thought you’d be
spending a week in
Greece. Who is watch-
ing you sign your name
in order to match it with
an address in the phone book? Hair salons and
restaurants are also favorite places for criminals
to pick up on your travel plans. You’ll go a long
way toward preventing a break-in by discussing
your travel plans on a need-to-know basis only.

A visit from a friend while you’re away can
provide valuable security. If you have a burglar
alarm, give a friend a pass code so he or she
can feed the dog, water plants, gather the mail,
and even move your second car to the other
side of the driveway. Leaving the dog home
instead of kenneling it provides a strong deter-
rent when nobody else is there. A car that
changes locations is one of the best ways to
maintain the outward signs of occupancy. Mail
piled up and drooping plants encourage the bur-
glar who sees these as signs that nobody's
home.
Arrange for someone to mow your lawn or
shovel your driveway. A well-groomed lawn or a
shoveled sidewalk lasts for days, subtly sug-
gesting that the house isn't vacant.
Use timers for your lights, radios, TV, and
other appliances to create a lived-in look and
sound. NEVER leave lights burning constantly-
. it’s a sure sign that there’s nobody home.
Baggage handling is another day job that a
criminal can use to get your travel information.
Luggage tags should have your business
address and phone number instead of your
home information.
For persons with a monitored security sys
tern, let the central station know you’ll be out of
town. They can give police an authorized key
holder to contact in an emergency
Home Security While You’re Away is provided

Home Security While You’re Away
As fun as a vacation can be, it’s also a time of
increased risk for burglary. Your best defense is
to hide the fact that you’re away.
