be causing the problem and how can it
be treated’
DEAR READER Following re-
moval of a major vein in the leg peri-
odic swelling may occur because the
venous blood is unable to find alter-
nate channels back to the heart When
blood is trapped in an extremity the
fluid in the blood leaks out of the
blood vessels into the tissues This
produces edema, the accumulation of
liquid, which gravity pulls to the low
est portion of the body This is why
your foot is less swollen when vou ele-
vate it; you are using gravity to emp
ty the blood fluid out of the leg
Elastic support stockings will help
you by exerting gentle but firm exter-
nal pressure (against gravity), which
prevents pixiling of blood in the
extremity
