or elephants in midstream.

resignation of Jewell Fisher
from the Memorial Medical

Belk cast the dissenting vote.
Earlier Belk proposed that
commissioners court fill the
vacancy with Greg Falcon and
Commissioner Oscar Hahn sec-
onded the motion. However,
Judge Hartzog and Commis-
sioners Helen Smith ahd Stan-
ley Mikula abstained from vot-
ing. Without a quorum voting,
Falcon could not be appointed.
Judge Hartzog made the motion
to appoint Hayne.
“This is the first time in 19
years that three members of the
court abstained at the same
time,” Belk said afterwards. “I
was shocked.” < ;
The Calhoun County Health
Department is hosting a food .
protection management train-
ing program April 16 and 17 in
the courthouse annex. ;
The classes will commence at
9 a.m. on both days. This will be *
a 15-hour course. There is a fee.

resulting in seizure of over $1
million in illegal property and
narcotics.

came after U.S. Senior Patrol

The U.S. Border Patrol’s K-D
and Port Lavaca K-9, Bed,
alerted on the vehicle where
8180,000 in marijuana anti
$800,000 in cocaine were
located.
Since the K-9, Beo, came to
work with the Port Lavaca
Police Department in 1993, he
has assisted in the seizures of
over 81,000,000 in property and
illegal narcotics.

fees. He was placed on five
years probation and ordered to
serve 160 hours of community
service.
Samuel Cuellar plead guilty
to third offense driving while
intoxicated. He was fined
$1,000, had his drivers license
suspended for a year and was
ordered to serve 15 days in the
Calhoun County Jail, beginning
April 15, 1994. He was also
placed on four years probation
and ordered to serve 160 hours,
of community service.
Rudolph Lopez Herrera

controlled substance. He was
fined $140 restitution to the
Department of Public Safety,

Rabies drive
Residents of Calhoun
County will have an oppor-
tunity to protect their pets
from rabies at a reduced cost
all this week.
The 1994 Calhoun County
Rabies Drive is scheduled
for the week of April 11-16 in
locations all around the
county. The drive is an annu-
al event sponsored by the
Calhoun^County Health
Department and organized
the Calhoun County Vet-
erinary Medical Association.
It is part of an ongoing effort
to minimize the chance of a
Ideal rabies outbreak..
While there has not been a
case of rabies diagnosed in ■.
Calhoun County since 1985,
cases continue to be seen in
surrounding counties. Vic-
toria County has had three
confirmed <
far this'year.
