ROBSTOWN - The Calhoun Sand
crabs continued to have defensive
problems during Friday evening's
District 15-AAAA baseball contest
against the Robstown Cottonpickers
This time their mistakes cost them a
share of the district lead, as the Cot
tonpickers rallied from a 3-0 deficit
to take a 4-3 victory over Calhoun
Eric Gonzales scored all the way
from second on a James Crites
throwing error in the bottom of the
fifth inning to give Calhoun their se-
cond loss in their last three outings
Only one of Robstown's four runs
in the bailgame were earned, as the
Sandcrabs committed a total of five
errors in the contest. The Cotton-
pickers scored two runs in each the
fourth and the fifth innings for the
eome-from behind victory
Robstown upped their District
15-AAAA mark to 7-1 and their
season record to 14-5. Calhoun fell to
14-5 on the campaign and to 6-2 in
district action
Ronnie Castaneda overcame a
rough start to secure the victory for
Robstown, improving his record to
6-3 with two wins over Calhoun
Brett Montier suffered the loss and
his mark evened out at 2-2 on the
season
The Sandcrabs bolted out to a 2-0
lead in the first inning thanks to
Castaneda's wildness Lee Cormier
gpgi
lead to 4-3 loss
I
and Josh Billings led oft the contest
with back-to-back walks Cormier
stole second base and scored on two
consecutive wild pitches
| Billings moved ail the way to third
when Castaneda's pickoff attempt
was errant Montier brought him
home with a one-out sacrifice fly
Calhoun padded their lead with a
single run in the fourth
Montier hit Castaneda's first pitch
sharply into left field for a single
With Lloyd Hall running for Montier.
Bill Miller grounded to third on a hit
and-run play Hall was able to ad
vance all the way to third base on the
play
Shortstop Oscar Zamora couldn't
handle an Andy Saenz roller and
Hall came in with Calhoun's third
run of the contest
The Cottonpickers cut that lead to
3-2 in their half of the fourth frame
Gonzales singled to left and advanc
ed to second on Jerry Reyes' error
With one out. Mike Mireles slapped a
single to left, leaving runners on
first and third
Zamora hit a grounder to short
and Calhoun looked like they would
escape the inning unscathed The
run scored from third, however,
when Danny Trejo s relay throw to
first to complete the double play
eluded Miller
Herman Vasquez followed with an
RBI single for the Cottonpickers
Montier coaxed Matias Pacheco to
fly to center field to close the inning

split 6-2
CINCINNATI (API The defen
ding champion Houston Astros have
lost more than jusl their first series
with the rival Cincinnati Keds Their
pitchers also lost their domination ot
the club that was their closest
challenger a year ago
The Reds split a double header
Sunday with Houston to end their
four game series with a 3 1 advan
tage Houston's Mike Scott quieted
the Reds' offense in the first game
for a 7-3 Astros' win. but Kai Daniels
and Tracy Jones hit homers in the
nightcap tor a 6-2 victor)
In all. the Reds batted 282 during
the tour game series, with 20 extra
base hits and eight homers, three ot
them by Daniels That was a major
turnaround from last year, when
Houston went 14 4 against the Reds
and held Cincinnati to a 193 team
average with 34 extra base hits and
10 homers over the full season
Houston won the National lx*ague
West last year, with second place
Cincinnati finishing 10 games back
But Beds Manager Pete Rose
figured the offensive display this
weekend opened the Astros eyes
"I don't think they realized we
have as much power as we showed
them the last three days.' Rose
said
The Astros were impressed with
Cincinnati's firepower
"They have so many guns that if
you get one out, somebody else will
come and get you," second baseman
Bill Doran said
Doran and Scott led Houston to its
only victory in the series in the first
game Sunday Doran, who grew up
in suburban Cincinnati, drove in
three runs with tin- first two homer
game of his career Scott, last year s
NL Cy Young Award winner, ran his
record to 3-0 in four starts by holding
Cincinnati to three hits over seven
innings
Scott left after the seventh
because his upper back got stiff
Larry Andersen pitched two perfect
innings in relief
Scott gave up a solo homer to
Daniels in the first inning and a dou-
ble to Dave Parker, then held the
Reds hitless until Kurt Stillwell hit a
two-run homer in the seventh Scott
said he decided after the first inning
that he had to pitch better
"I thought I'd better bear down, or
it might lx* a long day. since it was
the second inning of the first game ot
a double header'■ he said
"When you get two hits in the first
inning and you don't get another one
until the seventh, that's pretty
good." Hose said, admiringly "He
didn't have very good velocity for
the first two innings, then he got it
going in the third "
The Astros made it feel like a long
afternoon for left-hander Toni
Browning, 1-2. who gave up six runs,
six hits and three walks in 4 1-3 inn-
ings Phil Garner also hit a two-run
homer off Browning and later added
an HB1 single
