What price can be placed on
friendship? They just don't make
that much money in the world!
Thomas and I have just returned
from vacation...lO days of gor-
geous unreality.
But, for a while it looked as if
there wouldn't be a
vacation....because everything
that could go wrong was.
It's always hard to get off on a
trip in our business.
Stuff has to be prewritten, ar-
rangemnts made for delivering the
papers, people have to be lined up
to take care of the house, the ani-
mals, the cattle.
To complicate matters further
this year we had four hei fers about
to calve.
Of course, one of those heifers
calved two days before we were
due to leave...and didn't have a
clue as to what that calf was.
She simply didn't want the baby,
didn't like it, wouln't have it
Being rather isolated, we al-
ways have our close friends from
Paris in to housesit, feed the
menagerie, and water my multi-
tude of plants. Usually it's fun for
them...they sun on the deck, cook
on the grill, generally enjoy the
change.
They moved in, fed the inside
cat, the outside cats, the dogs and
ducks, watered the inside plants,
watered the outside pot plants and
watered the outside flower beds
Their teenage son went up ev-
ery evening and pul the cow in the
chute so that the calf could eat. He
was unable to do it in the morn-
ings because it was stil dark when
he had to gel up and ready to drive
to school.
So another friend got up early
every morning and repeated the
process. Still Another friend was
on "standby” to fill in if one of the
other two couldn't be there. And
finally, there was a young friend
who was going to take the calf to
bottle raise if that became the best
option.
When we arrived home it was
to find all was well.
. Our plants were well taken care
of, the dogs and cats were happy,
the cow still doesn't know what
that little thing following her
around is, but at least is "chute
trained", the last heifer is safely
calved and the office staff had
taken exquisite care of virtually
everything that needed taiking
care of.
We handed out gifts, but just
uon't have enough money in the
world to buy what all these good
friends deserve!
It's incredible the amount of
time and trouble these people went
to so that we could have our yearly
10 day vacation from reality.
Most of us have friends like
this...people who arc willing todo
whatever is necessary...who
would, as the expression goes,
"go above and beyond the call of
duty” to help another.
They are beyond price...but one
thing each of us can do is express
our sincere appreciation to them
now and again.
<, That's what I'm doing right
j»w...saying "Thank you, thank
you, thank you" to each and every
one of them.
i Do you have some friends who
need thanking too? Most of us do.
