in Franklin and three in Red
River.
The changes were made after
a study of traffic problems in
District 1-B of the Texas
Highway Patrol. The district
includes 18 counties in the
Northeast Texas region. This
district, which includes Hop-
kins County, will have 102
Highway Patrolmen stationed.
A study of traffic and traffic
fatalities in the 18 county
district shows that there is a
three year fatal accident
average of 163, and that
motorists in the area travel an
average of 7,336,559 miles
yearly
Cody said the THP officers
took the total number of
fatalities on the average, and
calling it 100 percent, then
divided the areas up so each
would have a fairly equal
percent of the “problem."
Because of the number of
patrolmen in the district, they
were able to assign an officer
for each percent of the problem.
The percentage in each
county is figured by averaging
the number of fatalities with the
miles traveled in each county.
Thus in Hopkins County the
percent of the problem in traffic
deaths in five, taken from a 6.3
fatality average plus an
average of 453,102 miles
traveled yearly in the county,
tn Rains County the fatality
average is 3.3. with 88,769 miles
traveled by motorists for a
percentage of 1.6.
In Franlklin County the
fatality rate is 1.7 with 123.648
miles for 1.4 percent, while in
Red River County the fatality
average is 7 with 233.896 miles
for 3.7 percent
Cody said the new Sulphur
Springs area will thus have 117
percent of the total problem for
the district, with the other
seven areas having roughly the
same percentages. Cody's area
will have 13 officers to handle
the load
Cody said the new area does
nut affect the driver license and
license and weight division of
the Department of Public
Safety, only Highway Patrol
The changes are being made
in District I B in the effort to
equal the work load, the officer
said Patrolman Koonce in
Kanins County will begin work
Oct 15.
Highway Patrol Area Changed
Highway Patrolmen will be in
a new area effective Oct. I, with
Sgt. W. A. Cody still in
command.
The change is the addition of
'•Red' River and Franklin
counties to the area and the
deletion of Van Zandt County.
The new area, with Sulphur
Springs as headquarters, will
be Hopkins, Rains, Red River
and Franklin counties
Van Zandt and Wood counties
will join together for a new
area
Cody said the change means
that there will be one less
