days with high pollen counts.
This information is available with
the weather report. A low count
(five or under) combined with
bad air pollution is as bad as a
high pollen count foor many al-
lergic people.
*Stay away from strong sprays,
-___•__.__£__in,
izers, and irritating odors.
♦Avoid garden work. It stirs
up increased amounts of pollen
and mold spores. Don’t have cut
flowers in your home.
♦Synthetic carpets and blank-
ets are recommended because
they don’t hold dust.
♦Try to keep from getting over-
ly fatigued.
♦Refrain from smoking.
♦Curb your intake of alcohoL
These beverages tend to dilate
the blood vessels — just as the
histamine reaction, which causes
your runny nose and watery eyes,
does.
♦Check the local pollen count
before choosing a vacation spot.
♦Don’t swim in chlorinated wa-
ter unless you wear nose clips.
Help with a booth, volun-
teer to set up equipment at
the park...most of that work
will be done today (Wednes-
day) and Jerry Martin said
he could use all the help he
could get...or just go watch
the parade.
A lot of work by a lot of
people has gone into making
this Fourth of July a big
event in Burleson. Don’t
miss the fun.

determine if the council
would like to interview the
candidates personally.
No probable date was
given as to when a new city
manager might be employed.
The position is now being
filled temporarily by Police
Chief Homer Barns who
served in the same capacity
when the city was without a
manager several years ago.
The city’s accountant said
the city now pays about
$5,000 a year for one
employee in the city tax
office. He added that strict
controls would be necessary
for accounting purposes, if
the city contracted with the
school district for tax collect-
ing services.
CITIZENS interested in
figures and how their money
is spent by local government
might want to attend work-
shop sessions of the city
council when they start work
on the new budget. First
meeting is Wednesday night,
July 17, at city hall.
■ A young man had returned to our town
■ with a degree from the best school in
I our state. He took up his life as a
I popular partner in his father's prospering
■ business. It was easy to see that every
■ advantage was his.
I I admired him from afar. "I, too, could
■ be popular, "I said to myself, "if I were
■ in hisshoes instead of mine."
I I didfi't dwell on the matter. I certainly
■ didn't burn with envy, but I did feel that
F fate had dealt me a less likely hand
than his.
Then, one day, I was called to another
g pastorate in a distant city. On my last
E day as I said goodbye to friends, he
■ handed me a letter which he asked me
■ not to open until I was gone.
E Following his request, I opened it after
E I left town. He had written that fate
E had dealt him a less viable hand than
E mine. He told how empty of real
B accomplishment his life was and that
E if he had the courage,'he would like to
| be just like me.
R I think it was then I learned, once and
I for all, of the mockery of the greener
fl grass on the other side of the fence.

in the immediate area later.
Plans are to rebuild some
streets which are past the
point of economical repair.
-Took no action on a
request for a mobile home
permit.
-Held for later discussion
a six months financial report
from city accountant Danny
Simmons. He indicated that
with half the year gone
about 60 percent of the city’s
budget had already been
spent but that sufficient
funds were on hand on which
to operate the remainder of
the fiscal year.
In a monthly report,
Simmons noted that ex-
penses iftere up in May
because of a payment to the
Internal Revenue Service for
back withholding taxes.
-Delayed a decision on a
proposal by Tax Assessor Ed
Carroll that he be allowed
also to handle the city’s tax
collections.
Caroll is employed as tax
assessor-collector for the
Burleson Independent
School District which con-
tracts the city’s tax assess-
ing responsibilities. The city
now does its own collecting
and is set up on a computer
system.
Estimating an annual cost
of $4250 for the collecting
work he could do for the city,
Carroll said the extra money
could be used to add
personnel to aid in his
assessing work. Thus the tax-
rolls could be kept current;
and his office operated more
efficiently, he indicated.
He said he would make the
same peoposal before the
school trustees, but wanted
to know the city’s opinion in
the matter first.

city engineer that work is
progressing on street im-

old utility lines were found in
initial work on Warren

have to be relocated, he said,
thus slowing work some-

Following story was in
Bits & Pieces:
A father sought to teach
his young son a moral lesson.
He gave the boy a quarter 1
and a dollar for Sunday-
School.
“Put whichever one you
want in the collection plate
and keep the other for
yourself,” he told the boy.
After the services were
over, the father asked his |

given.
“Well,” said the boy, “I was1

Summer, to most of us, means
days devoted to baking in the
sun, riding the surf, or camping
in the wilderness. However, to
those with summer allergies, it
means three months of watering
eyes, dripping noses, and itching
skin. . .
Although you can’t cure aller- cleaning agents, inorganic fertil-
gies — the tendency for allergic ’---- —’
response is inherited — there are
guidelines that can help you con-
trol them throughout the pollen
season.
♦Wear glasses — regular or
sunglasses, preferably large wrap-
around or aviator styles when
outdoors — they may help keep
the pollen from blowing directly
in your eyes.
♦Keep doors and windows
, closed, especially on dry, windy
days when pollen blows freely. If
you must open a window, try not
to sleep directly under it.
♦An air conditioner is recom-
mended, but be sure it is the re-
circulating type. An air purifier
can also be helpful, but be care-
ful what you buy. According to
the Food and Drug Administra-
tion, many of the household air
purifiers now being sold in retail
stores are not effective.
