South is not the only person on
the housekeeping staff who
came for a job and stayed on.
“We have a lot of people who
have been here for 10 years and
longer. We’re just like a big
family,” she said with a bright
smile.
Even though South likes TWU,
when she was first offered the
job of lead housekeeper she
didn’t take it.

She's kept TWU
clean for years

In the dark, long before the
rest of the campus is awake,
Jean South makes her way to the
basement of Margo Jones
Auditorium to supervise her four
o’clock shift.
She’ll still be there at five to
greet her second shift of
housekeepers.
Early hours don’t seem to
bother her. She’s been keeping

“I just came here to apply for
a job because a friend of mine
was quitting hers, and she told
me about it. I thought I’d stay
At fora few months,” South said as
her eyes sparkled behind her
glasses.
“I never thought I would stay
this long,” she added.
South said that things have
changed a lot here since she
£ began as a housekeeper for
K Mary Gibbs Jones dorm.
2 “Way back there it was dif-
K ferent,” she said. “You
K (students) weren’t allowed to
K wear shorts in the living room or
3 take cokes there.
J “I started when students
3 dressed up to go to classes,” she
3 said and added with a
3 grin,“we’ve got to see the boys
3 come in.”
South has served under three
presidents at TWU in her 25
years here. The first was Dr.
Guinn.
“I’d never gone to tea at Dr.
Guinn’s home or anything like
that, but I liked him,” she said.
Of Dr. Huev. South said “I lov-
ed her very much.
“I feel like Dr. Cha ter will
achieve our move into the
future. What I love about her is
that she seems like she cares
about my people. She walked up
to them and introduced herself.
She met them and talked to
them and asked how they were,”
South said, appearing awe
struck.
South said it takes about 70
people or more to really keep the
buildings clean, but since the
budget cuts she only has 55 on
staff.
“Since we’ve had the loss (of
23 people) we’ve had to make a
schedule for our people. They
can’t do a whole building like
they used to,” she said.
Before the lay offs, each
housekeeper had her building to

would think,‘Hey..’, you know I J
had been a housekeeper. I J
thought they might think I J
thought I was something,” she J
said. 1
“But 1 was offered again, and
this time I took it. We had a
meeting to tell the others I would
be the lead housekeeper and
they were happy; they hugged
my neck,” she said and smiled
as she remembered it.
Her office is as neat, well, as
a housekeeper’s would be. Oil
paintings on the wall of western
scenes bear the signature of
Jean South. She said she paints
when she has time.
She said that she sometimes
says to herself, “Lord, you've
been here 25 years—it doesn’t
seem that long.
“I said I was going to retire
when I was 55; now I say I’ll
retire when I’m 60. But I’m 58
and I’m still here,” she said, and
the air was punctuated with her
delightful laugh.
