Why do Dallas County candidates not submit
paid announcements to the newspapers?
In neighboring counties and in most counties in
Texas, newspapers publish political announcement
columns.
The candidates pay the newspapers for having
their names appear regularly in tne announcement
columns as candidates for specific offices.
The Seagoville News has received no such an-
nouncements from Dallas County candidates. We
._ have received stacks of free publicity, advancing
the merits and achievements of the candidates . . .
But no PAID announcements! " —
~We..are n6t. mScerfa^^ hot know
why candidates for office should expect news-
papers to bear the cost of printing their publicity
. . . advancing their merits . . . and telling the vot-
ing public why they should leave their names on
ballots when they go to vote.
Newspaper space costs money . . . just as ap-
ples, bed sheets, pianos, and TV sets.
Candidates should PAY for their announce-
ments in newspapers . . . not expect the publish-
ers to GIVE the space to them.
This does not mean that news columns should
not print the news of the campaign and perhaps
list the candidates. But there is no reason why ANY
newspaper should print free a candidate’s announ-
cement, written to advance his personal ambitions,
and meant to influence the voters. This is adver-
tising,’pure and simple.—Seagoville News
