"Christian Citizenship Week" be-
gins Monday in chapel.
John Gill, chairman of the Bap-
tist Student Union sponsored pro-
gram, has announced that the
theme for the week will be "Christ
in My Vocation" and that speakers
will be outstanding Christian lay-
men in Brownwood, and Brooks
Wester, pastor of the Park Place
Two One-Act Plays Spanish Major
Named For Season Teach q
Two one-act plays are scheduled
for production by the Division of
Speech Arts October 20, announced
Dr. McDonald W. Held, division
chairman.
Dr. Held added that anyone who
would like to try out for the plays
should contact him immediately
and he emphasized that anyone in
the college is eligible for the pro-
ductions, regardless of previous
experience.

Gill said that the speakers will
address those attending the "Noon-
Day" meetings and Monday's and
Friday's chapel programs.
The week of "emphasis on Chris-
tian leadership" will feature Wes-
ter at the Friday chapel service
and an "outstanding personality"
at the Monday program. Dr. Guy
D. Newman, president, will have
the Wednesday service as usual.
Wester is presently a member of
the Executive Board of the Baptist
General Convention of Texas; mem-
ber ef the Board of Directors of
the Baptist Standard, and a mem-
ber of the Radio and Television
Commission of the Southern Bap-
tist Convention.
Course In Digits
Being Ottered
A course in digital computing is
being offered in the evening divis-
ion curriculum this fall and next
spring.
The course, which may be taken
for credit or non credit, may be
counted as work in one of four
fields—psychology, physics, math-
ematics or business—explained
Dale Maness, head of the HPC
mathematics department.
Students taking the course for
credit were required to show a
previous six hours of work in the
subject field in which they are
seeking credit.
Maness is the instructor for the
course, scheduled at 6:45 p.m.. each
Tuesday in Room 204 of Walker
Memorial Library.
A non-credit course in conver-
sational Spanish is now being
taught by Joseph Velez, a junior
Spanish major.
Ten have enrolled in the class so
far, among them ranchers and
teachers.
The class meets from 6 to 9 p.m.
Tuesdays in room 201 in the li-
brary.
Cost per semester is $24.
Today is the last day to enroll,
according to Mrs. B. O. Herring,
registrar.
The class is being taught to help
those who work with Spanish-
speaking people and need to under-
stand everyday words.

For Baylor,
Then Kingsville
A number of debaters and their
sponsor, Dr. McDonald W. Held,
are scheduled to leave this morn-
ing at 7 to attend the Province of
the Lower Mississippi, Pi Kappa
Delta, speech workshop at Baylor
University.
Approximately 15 to 20 colleges
and universities from Texas, Okla-
homa, Arkansas, and Louisiana
will converge on the Waco school
for the program which will begin
at 9:30 this morning andl close at
noon tomorrow.
The workshop, sponsored by Pi
Kappa Delta, a national honorary
forensic fraternity, is designed to
help student speakers in individual
speaking events (oratory, extem-
poraneous speech, poetry reading)
and to discuss the various phases
of the collegiate debate topic, "Re-
solved: That the United States
Adopt a Program of Compulsory
Health Insurance for all Citizens
of the United States."
Dr. Held and Joe Gwathmey
will discuss the oratory contest
with the students.
The group will return at 6 a.m.
Sunday after going to Kingsville
where some will broadcast the
HPC-A&I football game over the
college radio station, KHPC.

Community Symphonefte Plans Roll
Into Action For First Of Year
Plans for a Community Sym-
phonette to be sponsored by
Music Division have been announc-
ed here.
The announcement came from
E. N. Elsey, division chairman, and
Donald Goss, music faculty member
who will direct the group.
Adult or high school musicians—
especially string instrument play-
ers—of the Brownwood area, in
addition to HPC students, interest-
ed in playing with the group are
invited to attend a rehearsal, Goss
said.
Rehearsals will be from 7 un-
til 9 p.m. each Tuesday in the HPC
band hall on Fisk Avenue.
As its first official function, the
Symphonette will play the accom-
paniment for the performance of
"The Messiah" scheduled by the
music division this winter.
A spring concert by the Sym-
phonette also is planned.
Goss joined the Howard Payne
faculty this year. Last year, he was
band dricetor for the Hernando
County Junior High School, Brooks-
ville, Fla.
He previously had served as di-
rector of instrumental music at
Laffayette Junior High School in
Louisiana, where he organized the
string program, and as director
for the state vocational training
school in Nashville, Tenn.
He has served as choir director
at Richland Baptist Church in
Nashville, and played: the 1958-59
season with the Nashville Sym-
phony Orchestsra. He helped or-
ganize the Lake Charles, La., Civic
Symphony.
He holds the bachelor of music
education from McNeese State Col-
lege, Lake Charles, and the mas-
ter of arts in music education from
George Peabody, Nashville.
