Yellow Jackets Attack ACC
;
ISRAEL (TANK) CORTEZ
... Ready For Saturday
Against Tough McMurry 4 „
Game Effort
A tremendous effort which
has typified Coach H. N. (Rusty)
Russell's 40 years of coaching
was unreeled by the Yellow
Jackets here Saturday nighty
but the Paynemen were never
able to turn either one of their
penetrations into a touchdown
as they bowed to rugged, three-
team-strong McMurry, 7-0, be-
fore a crowd of more than 4>000
fans at Lion Stadium.
The Indians, who were
never able to muscle through
HPC's great first-game de-
fense — except once — made
good on their one peneration
in the second period. Left-
handed quarterback Lee King
fired a 27-yard pass to end
James Christopher, setting
the Indians np in business
on the HPC 11-yard stripe.
Though the Paynemen strong
np a good goalllne defense,
fonr plays later 215-pound
fallback Fred Austin bulled
across from inside the one-
yard line. Bong James booted
the PAT for & 7-0 Ifeadl with
8:38 remaining before half-
time.
The Paynemen, who depended
on a sparkling 47-yard-run by
halfback B. J. Korenek in the
third period to get their heads
above water in the rushing col-
umn, came closest to scoring
the first time they owned the
football.
They moved from their own
22 to the McMurry 47, where
Korenek maneuvered forward
and back, right and left, before
finally passing to end Darrell
Walker, who was all alone on
the Indian 10. When he caught
the ball, he was immediately
smeared by Indian secondary
defenders.
Freshman quarterback
Grady West, who turned in a
tremendous offensive perfor-
mance both overland and in

the air before a third-quarter
injnlry halted his play, ran
from the spread to the five,
but subsequent plays lost
yardage to the IS, where the
ball went over on downs.
Korenek, the game's leading
rusher with 67 yards in seven
carries, did a fine job passing,
too, when he took over West's
quarterbacking job in the sec-
ond half. Besides this, he got
in good toe work, kicking five
times for an average of 40.6
yards per effort. He also was
a top defensive hand.
In the final stanza, the In-
dians completed an aerial to
the Jacket 14, but Jim Dens-
man's fumble of the pass was
recovered by Max Graham, sett-
ing the stage for the longest
run of the night On the next
play, Korenek burst around) left
end for a 47-yard scamper, and
was overtaken from behind by
Freddy Thompson on the In-
dian 41. The bid was spoiled on
the next play, however, when
one of the Savages' four pass
interceptions gave the posses*
sion of the ball.

PAYNEMEN SEEK TORCH VICTORY
AFTER DROPPING LAST S GAMES
Two teams with similar of-
fenses — both reputed! to be of
wide-open proportions — will
be out to score their first points
of the season here Saturday
night when Howard Payne Col-
lege Yellow Jackets play host
to arch-rival Abilene Christian
College.
If fair weather prevails, a
crowd of approximately 5,500
fans is expected to jam Lion
Stadium for the tilt, which will
be the 32nd of a long and color-
ful series involving the former
Texas Conference cousins.
And, for the first time In
HPC-ACC football feuds, the
Wildcats of new Head Coach
Les Wheeler have opportun-
ity to square the series. ACC,
which has won the past five
consecutive grid scuffles with
HPC, is now behind in the
entire series by only 15-14,
with two games having ended
In ties.
At Howard Payne, where
H. N. (Rusty) Russell also is in
his first season of coaching, the
veteran mentors of 40 years of
football wars has 10 positions
which are almost injury free.
But at that one most import-
ant spot in a wide-open, multi-
ple offense — the quarterback
position — there is real reason
for the Baptists to groan. Vete-
ran quarterback Bobby Goforth,
Galena Park senior, will be out
for at least one more game to
allow injuries sustained in an
auto smash-up time to heal. Joe
Carothers, transfer from TCU,
did not show up this fall, and
in the third period of HPC's
7-0 loss to McMurry here last
week, a promising 170-pound
freshman, Grady West, sustain-
ed his second injury of the con-
test to make dire conditions
even more serious.
West, who sustained' a deep
lip cut in the second period,
was sidelined in the third chap-
ter by a charleyhorse. This
forced fullback B. J. Korenek,
188-pound Waco junior, to fill
in at quarterback, and he per-
formed admirably — running,
passing and kicking — to keep
the Paynemen very stoutly in
contention throughout the game,
in which they made two pene-
trations without scoring result
Russell hopes, however, that
West will be ready to go Sat-
urday night, and1 fondly hopes,
too, that the following week
when the Yellow Jackets open
Lone Star Conference play
against Texas A&I at Kings-
viile, Goforth will he back in
the saddle to give the Jackets
some badly needed depth at
quarterback.
