The Tarleton Texans will be
playing at home for the first
time in their 1979’season as
they host the Sul Ross Lobos

The major announcement
from the Texan coaching staff
this week was the
replacement of senior
quarterback Dan Smalley by
sophomore Greg Edwards of
Comanche. Smalley who was
suffered an Injured hamstring
early in workouts saw his first
real starting action last week
against Austin College and
was not "up to par".

Another area that should
show big improvement is in
the Texan running game.
Coach Fomes indicated that
this area had received ex-
tensive work this* week and
that “they had better look
stronger."
The Stephenville ninth
graders suffered their first
loss of the season last night
but the defeat was not without
its dramatics.
Izad 7 to 6 into the clos-
ing minutes of the game, the
Jackets fumbled on their side
of the field and the Rams
scored moments later on a
pass play with just over a
minute left. The two point con-
version attempt failed, but the
Rams had a 12 to 7 lead.
The Jackets appeared to be
right back in it when on the
Rams kick off, freshman
Craig Whaley returned the
boot 70 yards to the endzone..
However, the excitement from
the stands and on the sideline
was dampened when a clipp-
ing penalty brought the ball
back to the 30.
From there, the Jackets
were unable to move the ball
and the Rams intercepted a
desperation pass to clinch the
marginal victory. For the

Their extra point attempt fail-

The 64) score stood through
the half and into the late
minutes of the third quarter
when Kobe Fomes tied it up
for the Jackets with a two
yard run to the goal. Todd
Wright gave the Stephenville
ninth graders the lead when he
cleared the uprights on the
point after.
The scoring drive was
highlighted by a 60 yard run
from scrimmage by Craig
Whaley. Whaley was pushed
out of bounds on the Rams five

situation.
It looked like the one point
margin would stand but with
the minutes ticking away and
the jackets in possesion on

defense recovered.
Coach Eddie Brown in-
dicated that the Jackets had

Cowboys return home
to host Chicago Bears
The Dallas Cowboys return to Texas Stadium for their regular
season home opener Sunday against the NFC Central Chicago
Bears. The Pokes have won two straight regular season games by
defeating the St. Louis Cardinals and the San Francisco 49ers.
The Bears also remain unbeaten with their most recent victory
a 26 to 7 whipping of the Minnesota Vikings.
Kick Off is 3 p.m. (Dallas time). The game is a sell-out and will
be televised on KDFW, Channel four in Dallas.
The Cowboys lead the series with the Bears with five wins and
three losses. The Pokes have defeated the Bears in the last thrde
outings and have won five of the last six meetings. The most
recent win was a 1977 di visional playoff meeting at Texas
Stadium. The Cowboys won 37 to 7.
Neill Armstrong is In his second season as head coach of the
Bears, following eight years on the coaching staff at Minnesota.
He guided the Bears to a seven and nine season his first year as
head coach. * *
The Cowboys victory over San Francisco was hardly an artistic
success, but it allowed the "defending NFC champs to grab an
early one game lead in the NFC race.
The Cowboys managed only 98 yards rushing last week and
* equaled a team record by drawing 14 penalties. It took two Rafeal
Septien field goals (including a 51 yarder) and two Roger
Staubach touchdown passes to overcome the 49ers lead.
• Harvey Martin added a safety in the closing minutes by tatkling
49ers quarterback Steve DeBerg in the end zone, sealing the
outcome. *
* Game balls went to Staubach,.who completed 20 to 33 passes for
’259 yards and two JDs; linebackers D.D. Lewis, whose fourth
do wig pa§s interception set up Billy Joe DuPree’s 13 yard
touchdown catch that send Dallas ahead 19-10; find Ron Springs
who returned thre^kickoffs 84 yards for a 28.0 average.
"Our guys were trying to win but we just didn’t concentrate real
well," Head coach Tom I<andry commented afteUhe game. "We
were getting penalties and dropping passes and doing things we
normally don’t do,”
The head coach said the team’s ability to pull the game out was
important because it proved they had a desire to win.
I-andry indicated that Chicago would be the toughest team the
Cowboys have met to date. ■ . q
"They’ve been playing excellent ball and defensively, no body
has been scoring on them. Payton has tremendous talents and is
an excellent ball player We’ll+iave our hands full with him." ©
"If you don’t stop him, he's going to run all over you. He runs
through tackles as well as around them. He's incredibly strong for
a guy his size and he's hard to get off his feet because he has great
balance," Ixindry continued. ’ .
The quarterback situation is a major concern for the Bears
right now. "Vince Evans is a bright young prospect with a great
arm," I^ndry commented "They are trying to groom him to give
them that long-term quarterback they need “
Landry says the Pokes will have to run the football well and be
able to stop Pay ton successfully to defeat the Bea rs. Henndicated
that Chicago has a multiple set defense with a strong pass rush;
that means the Cowboys must be able to run to slow them down.
"We’renot rushiflg well," landry concluded, "therefore we are
relying on Roger to do his usual super job. But we must improve •
the running game. It will help once Tony Dorsett is back to nor-
mal." , • '
“Defensively; the problem is that we’ne lacking a real strong
pass rush. Our great defensive strength has always been our pass
graders will play followihg a rush but it needs to improve," the head coach added.

CHICAGO (AP) — The next
pass Golden Richards catches
for the Chicago Bears will be
his first this season but the
star wide receiver who came
from the Dallas Cowboys last
year is not overly concerned.
In fact, Richards, whose last
touchdown pass came in Super
Bowl XU which clinched a 27-
10 victory over Denver, talks
about his blocking.
"I would like to catch some
passes if it would help and I’m
sure I will,” said Richards.
"The important thing is we
wop and I’m delighted with
my downfield blocking. The
last two games have been the
best back-to-back games I've
ever had in downfield block-
ing.”
Pass receiving and
downfield blocking were not
the subjects of importance at
this time. The Bears, who
have won their first two
games this season, last played
the Cowboys in the playoffs
two years ago and were
humbled 37-7. They play
Dalias Sunday and Richards
was being asked about the
Cowboys* mystique, their
aura, their glamour, their win-
ning ways.
"You must make the big
plays against them but you
must not panic," said
Richards. "You have to do
things differently but they
have to be logical. You can't
play against them and live on
a diet of junk plays.
"There is no question that
their opponents are awe
struck, especially in their
stadium," said Richards.
"They are aware of it Their
advantage is in the minds of
the people they are playing.
"You can’t guess with them.
The teams that beat us when I
was with them were the teams
that came at us and beat us
physically. Don’t get into a
guessing game with them.
They do a lot of different
things both on offense and
defense."
Richards feels there is an
advantage of playing the
Cowboys early in a season
because the Cowboys' new
people need time to be in-
troduced to their intricate
style of play.
"They’ve been tested this
season and maybe they
haven’t been awesome yet but
the bottom line is they are still
2-0,” said Richards, who made
it very clear that he is not go-
ing back to Dallas to engage in
any grudge match.
“I have no score to settle,”
said Richards. “They are
good, class people who gave
me my first chance. But we’d
like to win Sunday's game. It
would do a lot to bolster our
confidence in beating a team
like the Cowboys.
“Yes, of course, I’d like to
catch my first pass of the
season Sunday against them."
