American Speculators Are
Blamed for Increase in

it is a poor effort to describe 1
picturesque background used by Di-
rector Tod Browning, for a part cf
“The Day of Faith,” the Goldwyn
picture coming today to the Queen
theatre.

LONDON, ‘Aug. 14 —While Ameri-
can farmers exult in the sudden rise
in the price of wheat, Englishmen are
mourning and even becoming fearful.
With England almost entirely de-
pendent upon the outside world for
its wheat, flour and bread, t .
rapid increase in the price of these
commodities is a serious one, and
more serious while the nation is still
in the midst of a trade depression,
with a permanent army of unemploy-
ed of more than a million.
Flour prices have already increased
in England, and the price of bread is
gradually being raised. The people
are terming out in protest, and the
newspapers are making a great deal j New York

the
and the majorit:
onus on American speculators. More ■
studious thinkers, however, are J
searching elsewhere for light on the j
subject, for the point out that there i
is no world shortage in wheat and j
that England is not dependent entire- l'
ly upon America for her supply.
Some of the blame has been laid at
the doors of English authorities.
London stocks of wheat on July 1. I
were 279.400 hundred weight, against !
an average weekly consumption of j
nearly 600,000 hundred weight. The ,
majority of these stocks were held by ; —t
millers and were not available for! ~
the general market. The Port ot.
London Authority is blamed for this !
condition. It is contended that
port charges of London have
made so high that trade is
elsewhere and that local purchasers f
cannot afford to buy and store wheat |
when it is at a low level with
consequent result that all
feels eveijy fluctuation in prices.
