ATLANTA (AP) - It was
late in the Gator Bowl a year
ago when all the trouble
started for Clemson middle
guard Charlie Bauman.
He intercepted a pass that
killed Ohio State’s last chance
of winning, then was slugged
by Buckeye Coach Woody
Hayes, which led to the
veteran coach being fired.
“I don’t like to talk about
it,” said Bauman, who will
start for the Tigers when they
face Baylor Monday in the
Peach Bowl.

linebacker says he’s abandon-
ing his quest to play profes-
sional football again.
Tan Napel was in a coma for
3h weeks and was left partial-
ly paralyzed after a single-car
accident last April that claim-
ed the life of Falcons team-
mate Andy Spiva.
But the 25-year-old former
Texas A&M defensive back
fought back and is walking —
and running — again.
Throughout his months of
physical therapy. Ten Napel
ignored the skepticism of
friends and physicians and
said he would return to the
~ Falcons’ starting lineup.
But now he says he realizes
his playing days are over.
“I’m doing pretty good but
not good enough to play foot-
ball again," Ten Napel said in
a recent telephone interview
from his parents' home in-
Kemp, Texas.
"My quickness hasn't come
back — that's the only reason I
believe I was on the team
anyway — and I realize my
quickness may never come
back. So I just have to think
about doing other things than
playing football."
Although he won’t be able to
play football, Ten Napel’s
physical comeback has been
astonishing, said Dr. Diana
Cardenas, who was in charge
of his rehabilitation at Emory
University Hospital.
Ten Napel was working out
at the hospital just two months
after the accident, she said.
And the day of his release, Ten
Napel returned with a film of
him running at the Falcons’
Suwanee training camp.
“It required so much coor-
dination and strength at that
point, I really couldn’t believe
he was running,” Dr.
Cardenas said.
“You could write a great
story about his courage,” she
added. “He has some kind of
inner strength. One of the
neatest things about Garth
was that he never sat around
and felt sorry for himself. ”
It was his courage that kept
others from being too skep-
tical about his chances of play-
ing football again, said
Falcons trainer Jerry Rhea.
“The only reason nobody
wrote him off totally from the
beginning was that he kept
overcoming all the odds,"
Rhea said. '
Ten Napel said he plans to
open a dog kennel in Seven
Points, near his parents' home
and may return later to Texas
AiM to continue his educa-
tion. s

from here," he said. , '

Arkansas Coach says his team
is in New Orleans for fun
After a lengthy break for the holidays, Arkansas resumes its
non conference basketball schedule Friday and Sunday with key
games against Memphis State and Kansas State. The Razorbacks
and Tigers are set to square off at Mid-South Coliseum at 8 p.m.
on Friday. Then, the Hogs host Kansas State at Pine Bluff at 2
p.m. Sunday.
Arkansas is six and one for the season. They won their first six
games before suffering a 56 to 55 defeat against LSU at Little
Rock. Memphis State stood four and two before the holidays. The
Tigers have played every game so far at home. Kansas State
. owns an eight and zero mark going into Sunday’s battle.
—— In six years at Arkansas, Coach Eddie Sutton has compiled a
125-30 record which gives him a percentage of .807. In games
played within the Arkansas boundaries, Sutton’s teams have a
mark of 61 and six.
Dana Kirk is in his first season as head coach of the Tigers. He
' came to Memphis State from Virginia Commonwealth, where he
had a three year record of 57 and 23. Otis Jackson is Memphis
State’s leading scorer with a 13.1 average. Going into the Ole Miss
game, Memphis State had five players, including Jackson,
averaging over nine points a game. Jeff Battle was scoring at 12.6
a clip, Dennis Isbell at 11.5 and Steve Meacham at 9.4.
The Tigers own victories over Austin Peay, Eastern Montana,
Arkansas State and Murray State. Memphis has lost only to
Oklahoma Christian and Vanderbilt.
Arkansas has won its last two games with Memphis State after
losing the first four contests of the series. Memphis State’s last
victory came during the 1976-77 season when the Tigers handed
Arkansas its only regular season defeat, 69 to 62, at Little Rock.
The Razorbacks defeated Memphis State at Memphis 95 to 70, two
years ago and trimmed the Tigers 82 to 69 last year at Little Rock.
Like Arkansas coach Sutton, Kansas State mentor Jack Hart-
man played for legendary coach Henry Iba at Oklahoma State.
Hartman had a record of 178-84 at Kansas State going into his
tenth year with the Wildcats. _
Rolando Blackman leads a balanced Kansas State attack with a
14.3 scoring average. Ed Nealy is averaging 11.8 points per game
with Tyron Adams scoring 10.8 per game. Nealy also leads the Big
■ Eight in rebounding with 11 per game.
Arkansas snapped a four game losing streak against Kansas
State in 1977 when these two teams met. Sutton and Hartman are
one and one against each other as the Hogs won over the Wildcats
80 to 65 at Fayetteville, and the Cats trimmed the Porkers 73 to 71
in double overtime in Manhatten during Sutton’s first year at
Arkansas.
Arkansas has played the smothering defense through the early
season. The Razorbacks have limited their opponents to 44 per- .,
cent shooting and have held seven foes to an average of 59.1 points
per game. LSU, averaging 99.8 points prior to the game, scored
only 56 against the Hogs. Oklahoma City scored 68 points against
Arkansas, the most points permitted by the Porkers this year.
Offensively, the Hogs are hitting at only .478 per game and have
shot better than 50 percent only once this year. The probable
" starting line up for the Razorbacks this weekend will include 6-7
Alan Zahn and 6-WScott Hastings at forwards; 6-7 Carey Kelly at
center and 6-2JJLS. Reed and 6-2 Keith Hilliard at guards.
The Razorbacks open their defense of the,Southwest Conference »
championship on January 3 when they host SMU at Fayetteville.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) -
Arkansas Coach Lou Holtz is
brutally frank about compar-

Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on

to arrive until Friday.
“We’re not as good a foot-

' Between the time he got off
the plane and before he got on
the bus headed to his hotel on
Wednesday, Holtz clowned
with members' of the Dix-

team, talked to reporters and
signed autographs.
“I think there’s a time for
everything, and it’s time right
now to enjoy ourselves,” Holtz
said.
He said he decided to bring
his team in a week before
game time not because he
wanted the extra days of on-

wanted to give his players
more time off.
