Observing the 400th anniver-
sary of the birthday of William
Shakespeare, the Howard Payne
College Theatre is presenting
one of the playwrite's top
comedies, "The Merchant of
Venice," as a special feature of
parents' weekend.
Performances were held April
23, 24 and) 25, with a fourth
performance scheduled for area
high school students April 28
and a fifth for Parents' Weekend
will be held Saturday at 8 p.m.
Lighting is by Dr. McDonald
W. Held, head of the HPC speech
department and sets by Berne
Bnslin, HPC assistant professor
of speech.
Cast in the leads are Robert
Eaton, instructor of speech, as
Antonio, the merchant of Ven-
ice; James Harris, freshman
from Waco, as Shylock, the
money lender; Blaine Ruther-
ford, freshman from Waco, as
Portia, and Jimmy Glossbren-
ner, junior from Menard, as
Bassanio, suitor to Portia.

be the theme of the annual ban-
quet of the Association of
Women Studlents to be held at
7 p.m. in the cafeteria in Veda
Hodge Hall.

will begin Saturday activities.
The committee in charge In-
cludes representatives from
TSEA, Alpha Lambda Delta, Cap
and Gown and Pi Eta Delta.
The coffee is open to all stu-
dents and their families. It will
be held in the Formal Parlor of
Veda Hodge Hall from 9:30 to
11 a.m. The faculty and admin-
istration will receive the guests.
The A Cappella Choir will
give a concert in Mims Audi-
torium at 11 a.m. The choir is
under the direction of Ivan
Baugh, Choral Director of How-
ard Payne.
A barbecue will be held on
the lawn of Hodge Hall at 12:30
p.m. All students and their
guests are invited, but guests
who do not have meal tickets
must pay 75 cents before they
enter the serving line.
The HPC Band) will give a
concert at 2 p.m. on the lawn
of Old Main. After the concert,
the Alpha Beta Sigma, the Span-
ish Club, Physics Club and Blue
Key will host a punch party.
"The Merchant of Venice" by
William Shakespeare will be
presented^ at 8 p.m. in Coggin
Chapel Theater. Complimentary
tickets for parents and students
whose parent's are guests for
the weekend may be picked up
in the Student Center before
May 1 at 5 p.m.
Parent's were formally invit-
ed to the weekend with invita-
tions made by a committee com-
posed of members of BSU,
Philolkeans, Phi Epsilon Mu and
Psi Upsilon Chi.
Working with Miss Martha
St. Clair, Director of Student
Activities and Promotion, to
coordinate the weekend activi-
ties are James Shields, director
of Religious activities, Mrs. A. J.
Quinn, assistant professor of
education, Mrs. Margery Evans,
associate professor of business
and Bob Havins, director of
public relations.
