Last week's game with the
Abilene Christian College Wild-
cats cannot be expected to be
a true indication of the Yellow
Jackets' chances this year.
With only five starters return-
ing, one of Howard Payne's
main weaknesses seems to be
lack of experience.
This Yellow Jacket squad
must be one of the youngest
teams, experience-wise, that
this school has fielded in the
last few years. However, the
HPC defensive unit is playing
quite a bit of heads-up ball,
and with a little more time
under fire, this unit could be
one of the bright spots in HPC
football this year.
The defensive team which
made such a fine showing
against ACC was dominated
by freshmen. It should be
very interesting to note how
these and other freshmen
shine In weeks to come.
One thing very apparent at
last week's game was the en-
thusiasm and spirit with which
the Yellow Jackets took the
field and playedl the entire
game. This spirit was passed
on to the students attending the
game; It was good to see, as
the team ran onto the field the
second half, that these students
were out on the field to give
them that much-needed "stay in
there and! fight!"
As a freshman I would like
to encourage everyone of my
fellow classmates to take part
in freshman initiation this year.
The freshmen could lead
out this year as the most en-
ergetic and enthusiastic class
at HPC by attending all pep
rallies and all "campus-guard-
Ing activities."
Not only will we give our
team that added spirit, but also
we just might start something
which could make this a very
exciting "Sports Year" for the
Yellow Jackets of Howard
Payne College.

Cagers To Begin
Workouts Oct. 1
Basketball will take the spot-
light momentarily Oct 1 as
pre-season drills officially be-
gin.
Athletic Director Glen Whitis
is confident from the start that,
"we will be right at the top
in the conference," this year.
Whitis feels that "HPC has
some very bright prospects for
the coming basketball season."
Walter Carter, 6-6 all-confer-
ence forward from Gate City,
Va., will head the list of pros-
pects along with Robert Spring-
er, 6-8 center, from Vid'or, Tex.,
who led the nation as well as
the Lone Star Conference in
field goal accuracy last year.
Robert was also named to 2nd
team all-conferencec honors.
After being out for a year
with injuries Danny Faubion
and Jim Rich, both sophomore
guards, are expected to bolster
the first team. Whitis considers
Faubion and Rich "two of the
finest guards to be had."
More welcome news comes
from a junior college prospect,
6-7 center Dick Davidson and
a mid-semester transfer Larry
Scevers. Larry, playing at the
forward position, is the tallest
man on the squad at 6-8.
With classes in full swing at
Howard Payne College there is
expected to be a large number
of fans on hand to see the Yel-
low Jackets and McMurry In-
dians fight it out at Lion Sta-
dium Friday night. ...
Coach Joe Jaines has stated,
"I was in no way pleased with
the offense in last week's game
with Abilene Christian College,"
and he has been coaching them
night and day since. .
YELLOW JACKET CO-CAPTAINS - Kenneth Hudson, 6-3, 240
lb. tackle from Menard, and Paul Woodfin, 5-11, 200 lb. guard
from Albany, will take the field as this year's co-captains. Both are
varsity lettermen. -—Yellow Jacket Staff Photo
Wildcats Beat HPC 24-6
ACC Triumphs
SUN. THRU TUES.

For the first time since 1920
the Abilene Christian College
Wildcats took the lead in num-
ber games won in their long-
standing rivalry with the How-
ard Payne Yellow Jackets. The
Wildcats took their season
opener from the Yellow Jackets
24-6.
The Yellow Jackets played
close to the cuff for three quar-
ters before showing anything on
defense. HPC could not put to-
gether a sustained drive toward
the ACC gaol line through-
out the game until in the 4th
quarter, with 9:29 left on the
clock, Gene Young tossed the
bombshell to Eddie Daniel,
which put them on the board
for the only time.
For the entire first period and
half of the second, the Yellow
Jacket defense held its ground
without mishap. Then with 9:27
left in the half, ACC cracked the
center pusfc wide enough for
Jacky Roland to squeeze
through for the tally. Roger
Youngblood's kick was good,
making the score 7-0 at half-
time
The second half saw ACC tak-
ing the game to HPC's end of
the fieldi consistently. However,
Dennis Hagaman, ACC's lead-
ing ground gainer, took the ini-
tiative in the third quarter as
he scampered off tackle from
the 35 to the goal line, stand-
ing up. In the first few minutes
of play of the fourth quarter,
ACC capitalized on two first
downs by slipping Cullen Davis

wide around left end for their
third) touchdown.
The last score of the game
came with 40 sceonds left to
play as HPC's defense suddenly
stiffened and Youngblood had
to go for the field goal. This at-
tempt from 33 split the uprightB
and ACC went home with their
first win of the season.

New Staffers
Hard At Work
With new changes in the Ath-
letic Dept. of HPC, the Yellow
Jackets have launched them-
selves upon the 1964-65 sports
scene.
Heading the list of new
changes in the sports affairs
of HPC is Glen Whitis, a vet-
eran on the coaching staff and
a former Yellow Jacket athlete.
Joe James, a former Little
All-America tackle, takes over
as the new head football coach
this season.
A former teammate of Coach
James, Jerry Millsapps, joins
his Alma Mater as backfield
coach. Millsapps earned three
varsity letters as a Jacket sig-
nal caller.
Bill Purser, HPC's new line
coach, will also serve as head
of the Physical Education De-
partment. Purser served as line
coach for the Yellow Jackets
in 1961-62.
The HPC defense has been
briefed and drilled on McMurry
plays in the past week. Coach
James was "pleased with the
defense on the whole and the
extra effort on the part of some
of its members in last week's
encounter with ACC."
Coach James feels that "we
can't make the mistakes' we
made last week and expect to
come out on top this week be-
cause the McMurry team we
play this week will not be the
same one that took the field
against San Angelo last week."
The Indians' loss to San An-
gelo last week should make
them quite edgy this week. Sah
Angelo took advantage of ai
weak McMurry pass defense
last week, but this week Mc-
Murry is expected to have taken
their "lesson learned the hard
way" to heart, and should make
this grid battle something to
see.
Coach James has made three
changes in the Yellow Jacket
lineup for Friday's game. Fred
Saucedo will start at the tackle
position, replacing Kenneth
Hudson, who is out with a frac-
tured right hand. Kenneth
should be out of his cast by
Saturday, but he isn't expected
to see much action. Gen Par-
tridge will take over at the
halfback spot, with Grady West
calling the signals. Wesley
Johnson will continue to hold
down the fullback position,
with Bobby Stuart rounding out
the backfield at wingback.
On the line, the Jackets will
stay with its regulars with the
exception of Hudson. Starting
at the ends will be Eddie Dan-
iel and Ronnie Daum. Doing
the honors at tackle will be
Jim Gooch and Fred Saucedo.
Tackling the guard duties will
be Bill Stapp and Paul Wood-
fin. Jim Hargrove at center
will round out the 197.6 lb.
average line.
McMURRY'S BEST
For McMurry, junior Larry
Ethridge will carry the quar-
terback duties. Assisting him
in the backfield will be soph-
omore Kenneth Deckard and
tailback and senior Frank Hess
at wingback. Closing out the
backfield will be senior Bill
Grlssom at the fullback slot
Up front taking the brunt of
HPC's tough defensive special-
ists will be senior James
Christopher and sophomore Dale
Ruth at the end positions. Keep-
ing them company on the out-
side at tackle will be senior
Joe Coulson and freshman Har-
old Murrell The center of the
line will have freshman Jackie
Narrell at center and two jun-
iors, Larry Roten and' Butch
Stone, at the guard positions.
