Intramural football at How-
ard Payne seems to be support-
ed and played with as much
enthusiasm as any other sport.
FRESHMEN
The Freshmen is a new team
composed entirely of freshmen.
Co-captains are Marv; Knight
and Sonny Orsack. The ^name
was chosen with the idea in
mind of passing it on next year
to the new freshman class in
order, to give them something
to start with.
OUTLAWS
The Outlaws were last year's
champions and are undefeated
in play this far this year.
Monty Martin is a field general
and he calls all the shots. This
is what could be considered the
senior team in relation to ex-
perience and the number of up-
perclassmen on the team.
HEATHENS
Captain for the Heathens is
Billy Jack Shaw. The team is
composed of upperclassmen and
a few ex-football players. This
team has a lot of weight and
is probably one of the best de-
fensive teams competing.
MISFITS
Captain for the Misfits is
Edmond WheeUs. This name
like others, probably grows out
of a deep seated inferiority com-
plex in the realm of football.
DELTA SIGS
The Delta Sigs is a team
composed of fraternity broth-
ers from Delta Sigma Phi. Cap-
tain for the team is Fred Now-
bury.
SLOBS
The Klods is another team
composed of fraternity broth-
ers. Captain for them is Wen-
del Oliver.

Over HPC
FRESHMAN INTERCEPTS — Early in the second half HPC's
Larry Jones found the handle on a high pass from Sam Houston's
Norman Peterson, intended for Billy Arlen.
Howard Payne's Yellowjack-
ets suffered their first confer-
ence defeat Saturday night at
the hands of the Sam Houston
Bearkats, 20-0.
The first quarter was a dead-
lock as both defenses held
ground doggedly for 28 straight
plays.
However, play in the second
quarter was entirely different'
as Sam Houston rolled over
the Jackets for two touchdowns.
The first came with 13:22 re-
maining when Sam Houston's
quarterback, Norman Peterson,
passed to halfback Teddy Min-
yard for the touchdown. Wil-
liam Black split the uprights
for one point and the score
was 7-0.
The second score for
the Bearcats came after the
ball had changed hands three
times on three different pass
Jackets Travel to San Marcos
HPC Eyes SWT
As the Yellow Jackets prepare
to take on Southwest Texas
State in San Marcos Saturday
night, both teams will be seek-
ing their first Lone Star Con-
ference victory of the year.
Southwest Texas lost its first
LSC game to Sul Ross two
weeks ago, but bounced back
to tromp McMurry, 24-8, in a
non-conference contest last
week. ,
At least 12 members of the
36-member HPC squad will b6
hobbled by injuries. Pour of the
12 will not be suited out this
week and the remainder will
be slowed down.
The Jackets' loss last week
left them with a 2-3 record for
the season. Southwest Texas
will take a 3-1 mark into Sat-
urday's game.
HPC coaches could not find
a thing to be happy about fol-
lowing the loss to Sam Hous-
ton. "I thought it was our poor-
est defensive game, by far, this
year," commented James. "We
had some boys out with injuries,
but that shouldn't have made
that much difference on de-
fense," he continued.
Defense Down
"Our defense," James stated,
"got us out of the ball game
with Sam Houston real quick.
We were not agressive enough.
Against a team such as Sam
Houston or Southwest Texas
you've got to get tough with
them in a hurry."
While the Jackets droppedi
out of their second place rating
on pass defense, Southwest Tex-
as retained its lead as LSC
offensive rushing leaders. The
Bobcats are also rated third in
total team offensive gains and
second in total defensive yard-
age.
Three Weeks Still Left On
Intramural Play Schedule
Intramural play is well un-
derway now as all six teams
have seen action. In last Tues-
day's play the Freshmen lost
a close one to the Misfits 26-20.
In the second game the Heath-
ans stopped the Delta Sigs 24-
19. Games will be played for
three more weeks before the
HPC In Second
Cross Country
After last week's postpone-
ment, cross country action will
begin anew this Saturday at
Riverside Park as the Yellow
Jackets meet Abilene Christian
College at 10 a.m.
The run will cover a four-mile
course with all nine cross coun-
try men running. Cap Shelton's
cindermen are only allowed five
runners to compete for points,
but all will ran.
The five men competing for
the points will be Jim ©wing,
Bill Thomas, Tommy Sikes,
Jack Petty, and A1 McKee. The
four others running for the ex-
perience will be freshmen Kim
Thome, Charles Sprinkle, Gene
Graham, and Cliff Abshire.
Intramural Champ will be de-
termined.

Thursdays, 5:15 p.m.
Southwest Texas has not
rated as high in pass offense
as HPC has in pass defense,
but the records show that the
Bobcats probably won't give the
Jackets too much to defend in
the way of an aerial attack.
The Bobcats' main strength
in their ground game comes
from Reynaldo Farias and Joe
Bednarski. Farias leads the LSC
in rushing and in scoring.
The Jackets began prepara-
tions for Southwest Texas this
week with only 2 able bodies.
Not expected to suit up this
week are tackles Jim Gooch and
John Kubena, guard Lloyd Bees-
ley and defensive halfback Boh
Brewer. Gooch, with a thigh
injury and' Brewer, who was
knocked out-against. SHS, were
in the hospital. Beesley has an
ankle injury and Kubena has
an arm infection.
Jackets Injured
Others on the injury list are
wingback Wendell Byrom, knee;
end Ronnie Daum, hip bruise;
halfback Mike Rogers, knee;
tackle Alex Saucedo, ankle;
fullback Bobby Stuart, thigh
bruise; Wingback Ronnie Jen-
sen, bruises; and end Joe Wil-
hoite, neck injury. The latter
group will probably be able to
suit up Saturday night
Jacket statistics show that
quarterback Gene Young, half-
back Gene Partridge, wingback
Wendell Byrom and end Eddie
Daniel are the offensive lead-
ers through five games. Young
leads in passing with 212 yards
and in total offense with the
same yardage. Partridge Is the
team's leading ground gainer
with 176 yards on 54 carries,
Daniel is tops in pass receiving
with 136 yards on seven catches
and Byrom is the leading punt-
er with a 35.9 average.

interceptions. Sam Houston's
Edward Bittik grabbed the first
pass from the arm of Gene
Young. Howard Payne's Larry
Jones returned the favor two
plays later by intercepting Pet-
erson's toss on the Howard
Payne 44-yard line. JBut, again
the ball changed hands as SHS's
David Martin intercepted on the
HPC 47-yard line and returned
to the 33. The Bearkats didn't
wait for a second chance as
they drove down to the goal
line where Minyard passed to
Don Bates for the tally. Again
Black's kick was good and Sam
Houston led 14-0 with 4:11 left
on the clock-
Sam Houston's kick-off went
to Jensen on the 14, but the
Jackets couldn't muster the
needed punch to score in the
first half. So, with play giving
way to halftime activities HPC
trailed 14-0.
Thirdi quarter action began
with Howard Payne's Jerry Ed-
en kicking off to Bittick in the
end zone. Bittick returned to
the HPC 40, but after that!
the play was distributed evenly
between both teams for the en-
tire quarter as both showed
their toughest defense. The per-
iod ended with Sam Houston
still leading 14-0.
Sam Houston controlled nine
minutes and 18 seconds of the
fourth quarter using 16 plays
and covering 82 yards before
Peterson punched across their
third and final touchdown on
a keeper up the middle. Jim
Hargrove and Joe Wilhoite sti-
fled Black's third attempt for
the extra point and the game
ended with Sam Houston on
top 20-0.
