LONE STAR TIE
Stephen F. Austin's towering
Lumberjacks controlled both
offensive and defensive back-
boards to eke out a 77-74 Lone
Star Conference win over How-
ard Payne, previously unbeat-
en in conference action, and
throw the race back into a
deadlock at the top.
Both teams have identical
21-2 records on the year and
9-1 records in conference play.
The loss broke HPC's 17-game
winning streak.
Fred Davis was high scorer
for the Jackets and the game
as he meshed 25. He was helped
by Dan Smith's 20 and Gibbs
JAMES ANNODNCES
FOOTBALL SIGNEES
Coach Joe James has an-
nounced the signing of 10 trans-
fers, hoping some of them will
come through to fill in holes
left in his offensive line and
defensive secondary by gradua-
tion.
Two of the transfers are
Brownwood High School prod-
ucts. Richard Jones, a 225-
pound tackle transfer from Cis-
co Junior College, was an all-
district performer for Brown-
wood, and Kirk Wall, a flanker
who boasts fine speed, is a
transfer from Baylor, where he
started four of five games for
the Baylor freshmen.
James has also signed three
former Cleburne startsr-c, W.
Walker, a 205-pound transfer
from Texas A&M who plays
center; tough-running fullback
Gary Butler (205) from TCU;
and safety Gary Manasco (175)
from Tyler Junior College.
The best of the lot may be
Danny Ehle, a powerful 210-
pound running back who can
run a 10-flat hundred. The
former Houston schoolboy has
transferred from Texas Tech.
Another prize catch is Terry
Brewster, an Aggie transfer
who received all-state recogni-
tion at Jacksboro High School.
Also in the fold are Dublin
guard Randy Fletcher (210)
from New Mexico State and
Texas Western transfer Don
Sundermun (200), a quarter-
back - linebacker from Fort1
Worth Pasehial.
HOWARD PAYNE, SFA
BACK IN DEADLOCK
The Lone Star Conference
basketball race was thrown
back into a stalemate Monday
night as the Stephen F. Austin
Lumberjacks eked out a 77-74
decision over Howard Payne.
Each team has four games re-
maining, two at home and two
on the road.
Southwest Texas State, the
only other team with a chance
of figuring in the title, kept
its hopes alive with a 68-63
conquest of East Texas State.
McMurry, already out of the
race, evened its conference slate
at 5-5 with a 102-89 victory
over Texas A&I.
The Jackets will meet Mc-
Murry at Brownwood and the
'Jacks will host Texas A&I in
Saturday night action, and then
Southwest Texas will play SFA
at Nacogdoches and East Texas
will travel to Howard Payne in
Monday's activities.
The St. Mary's Rattlers cham-
pions of the Big State Confer-
ence for two straight years,
have already won that crown,
but may have to wait several
weeks before they know which
LSC team they will meet in
the playoffs for the right to
represent District 4 in the
NAIA Tournament in Kansas
City. , :
