off all of Mark’s back alimony payments. Oh well, we have
decided just to live one day at a time and see what happens.
I hope you are all well and keeping out of trouble. I don’t
know when I’ll see you again but until then have a Merry
Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Your loving and wonderful daughter,
Mary Lou
P.S. Dear Parents,
Let me explain myself-I have not moved into an
apartment, I do not have a boyfriend named Mark, I am not
pregnant and/or getting married. I did not have a concussion
nor is my arm broken. I do not smoke dope and I’m certainly
not in jail. But if all this makes my D in chemistry, F in
political science, and technical failure in english look any less
significant then by all means consider the previous
monologue as though it could have happened. But, it didn’t,
so please don’t cut off my allowance because of the “poor”
grades. Please keep in mind that I have learned a lot just
from this new environment and there is always next
semester for me to bring up my grades. One thing that is
true is that I have spent all my money and I would
appreciate it if you would mail me a plane ticket home for
Christmas.
Once again, your living and wonderful daughter,
Mary Lou
“Who Gets
The Pecans?”
By Overlin Rodriguez
With the pecan harvesting
season here, several stu-
dents at St. Mary’s want a
part of the crop.
But who is actually
getting most of the pecans?
With an estimate of close
to a hundred and thirty
pecan trees on campus,
someone must constantly
care for them. A few trees
have been on the campus
since 1898, while several
others were planted by
Brother Emil Pawelck.
Brother Pawelck has been
caring for the pecan trees
since 1940. He harvests,
sprays, grafts them. In his
words, he “doctors them.”
Brother Pawelck gathers
the pecans and sells them for
an average of 50c per lb. to
anyone interested in buying
them.
Students also buy pecans
from Brother Pawelck.
However, he says, “students
from the north are the ones
interested in buying them,
Texans want them for
nothing.”
Rogelio Magana, a fresh-
man from Weslaco said,
“When I -arrived at St.
Mary’s, I was under the
impression that I would get
a lot of pecans. But so far, I
haven’t been able to get that
many.”
