I wish to express my regrets
for the lack of coverage of the
annual Powder Puff football
game. It was not a matter of
endeavors.

The Management Develop-
ment Program is an ongoing
institutional program aimed at
improving overall effective-
ness of St. Mary's by im-
proving internal management.
The resources and materials
are provided by the Higher
Education Management Insti-
tute (HEMI). A 10 member
task force on management
development is co-cordinated
‘‘It could never happen to me.”
Everyday in a thousand different ways we protect
ourselves with the comforting but unrealistic thought that
disaster could never befall us. And to a degree this is normal
and natural, or else we could easily be overwhelmed by the
pressures of our existence.
So we go along, happily convinced that we won’t be
maimed in an auto accident, or fall down the stairs and break
our neck.
Or go to war.
Yet right now that possibility becomes more real with each
passing day, and each passing newscast of the events
overseas. Some of the touchy situations which point that
direction include:
* The holding of U.S. hostages for over two months by
Iranian militants.
* The Soviet invasion and consequent takeover of
Afghanistan.
* The threatening mobilization of Soviet troops along the
Iranian border.
* The clampdown on western journalists and media in Iran
and Afghanistan.
* The resurgence of the “Cold War” attitude between the
U.S.S.R. and the U.S. as a result of the hostile moves of the
Soviets; evidenced by the Olympic boycott controversy.
Although the international situation is grave, it is not yet
necessary to feel we should break out the fatigues, or start
cleaning the family firearm.
But perhaps now would be a good time to make some
tentative decisions, to consider our values and decide how
we personally would stand if it came to a question of war.
And finally, if we haven’t been taking the occurrences
overseas seriously, now is the time to start. Those events
across the ocean are no longer just distant unrelated affairs
of other people’s lives. They could easily reach out and
involve us, you and I, tomorrow.
Because it could happen to us.
Dear Editor:
It is quite disturbing that the
Rattler neglected to include a
report on one of the largest
recognized women's athletic
events at St. Mary's-the
Sigma vs. Sig Ep Powder
Puff Football Game. Those
young ladies who participated
in this event deserve recogni-
tion. They devoted quite a bit
of their time and energy to the
preparation of this contest.
Both teams played excep-
tionally good football, yet the
Sig Ep team prevailed, 16-6.
The Sigma Team played well,
but were unable to motivate
much offense, with the excep-
tion of a great kickoff return
by Eleanor Hagan, as the Sig
Ep defense kept them in their
part of the field most of the
game. The Sig Ep offense,
with superb blocking from a
smaller and outweighed line,
maintained a rigorous rushing
attack which would not be
denied. Congratulations are
extended to both fraternities
and teams for an event very
much appreciated by those in
attendance.
An unbiased coach,
neglect but rather circum-
stances which caused this
oversight. I am sure our
readers appreciate the infor-
mation offered by your letter.
My apologies to you and the
participants.

Dear Editor,
I would like to express my
appreciation for the masterful
performance given by one of
our fellow students here at St.
Mary's: Herman L. Offer! He
really is a piano master!!
I would like to invite others
to show their recognition of
Herman's excellent musical
talents. Indeed, Herman's
expertise will not be matched
at St. Mary's for years to
come.
When Herman leaves St.
Mary's his recitals and con-
certs will be missed. On
behalf of the students of St.
Mary's I would like to wish
Herman well in all of his

a random sample of students
will receive a letter from the

students to participate. The

starting a chapter of the
national service fraternity
here at St. Mary's! We are a
conglomerate from many as-
pects of the campus commun-
ity. I hope that Alpha Phi will
be able to accomplish many
service goals to St. Mary's,
San Antonio, Texas, and the
nation-our areas of service
concentration.
We have many things
planned for the spring which
hopefully will prove to be
successes. For instance, the
proceeds from each of our
"fund-raising” activities will
go towards some service proj-
ect according to national
chapter rules. Our first dance
on Feb. 1, will pay for a
broken stained glass window
in the Assumption Chapel.
Alpha Phi is more than just
service projects and raising
money for worthy causes, it is
a chance to be a friend, a
leader, and enjoy the bonds of
unity which exemplify bro-
therhood! For those who have
become charter members I
wish to congratulate you! I
hope that you are excited to be
a part of this founding group,
the first co-ed service organi-
zation at St. Mary's.
In closing, I would like to
remind the students of St.
Mary's that the present mem-
bers have set a deadline to
become a charter member as
Sunday, Feb. 3 at 6 p.m.
Also, those who have not paid
their dues (refundable) by the
above deadline will be
dropped as charter members
with the national head-
quarters in
Missouri.
