St. Mary's faculty members
accompanying the tour will be
the Rev. Charles H. Miller,
S.M., associate professor of
theology, and Sister Mary K.
Milne, O.S.U., theology lec-
turer and research assistant
supported by the Fund for
Judaeo-Christian Studies.
Miller has conducted study
tours of Bible lands for many
years. He is the author of a
book and numerous articles on
the Bible, and was a 1978-79
Fulbright scholar at the Ecu-
menical Institute for Ad-
vanced Theological Studies in

Over the past five months of this academic year, the students only trying to get the rules
enforced." But she admitted,
when the officials asked if the
coach was aware of the rule,
"I can't answer that."
Why couldn't she answer
that?

Over 50 people attended the
St. Mary's Spring Retreat,
held last weekend at H.E.B.
Camp near Leakey, Texas.
The theme of the retreat was
"Ministering to One Another:
Our Gospel Call."
The retreat emphasized
personal reflection on the
meaning of ministry in one's
life. To facilitate this goal, a
number of talks were pre-
sented.
Fr. John Moder gave a talk
on Christ and ministry; Fr.
Bob Sargent spoke on ministry
and prayer; and Fr. Bill
Meyer, Bobby Mannas, and
Carol Birdsong made a panel
presentation on ministry in
our everyday lives. A prayer
service with a pantomime, a
reconciliation service, and a
candlelight mass were also
presented.

VALENTINE MESSAGES
Next week, The Rattler would like to help all campus
sweethearts and others send out their Valentine’s Day
messages. Anyone wishing to have their Valentine message
»printed in the Feb. 13th issue of The Rattler office no later
than Monday morning, Feb. 11. Please keep them clean and
brief, as we will be editing them.
If we can continue to hold our liquor
properly on occasions like these, then it seems hopeful the
privilege will be broadened.
Another area of improvement raised by The Rattler was the
possibility of having an after-hours study area. This idea
received popular support from many students, but little
response from the administration. One dorm director, Paul
Daily in Marian Hall, did go to the trouble to fix up a room in
Marian where students could study late. His efforts were
appreciated, as many of the residents put the study room to
good use during finals.
Of course, the major blow-up this year has been over the
changes in Food Services. The student concerns included
[everyone probably has these memorized by now], the closed
cafe policy, the value of meal tickets in the SUB, and the
requirement that students other than seniors buy meal tickets.
Changes have been made in all these areas.
First, as a result of student voting on the food services
survey, the cafe was changed to an open system. This has
brought a la carte pricing and Vali-Dine with it. Response has
not been favorable. We got what we asked for—but not what we
wanted. Many feel we were better off before. Perhaps we
should have left that situation alone.
The value of the meal ticket in the SUB was increased, at
least for this semester. The administration indicated the move
was a conciliatory one toward the students—the school took a
small loss as a result.
And one of the best results of the food services uproar has
been that juniors are no longer required to buy meal tickets.
It’s not perfect, but its an improvement.
All in all, response to student concerns by university officials
has been good. The administration appears to have listened to
student concerns, and tried to make some changes. If this kind
of helpful, cooperative attitude can be maintained by both ;►
students and the administration in the coming months and
years, perhaps we can move St. Mary’s closer to being the kind
of school we all want.
ST. (MS [owl VISITOR

and this editorial column have raised various issues and
concerns. Now seems to be a good time to look at those issues,
and at what kind of response the administration has made
towards them.
One of the early concerns brought out dealt with the liquor
policy on campus. Since that editorial was written, some that? If she was really so
student groups have been allowed to have liquor at their parties concerned with having the
on a “trial’’ basis. If we can continue to hold our liquor rules followed, why didn't she

"Disloyalty" is not too
strong a word for attempts to
tear down a coach rather than
to help him do his job better.
If this had been an opposing
coach, wouldn't courteous and
decent conduct have dictated
that she talk to the coach first
before requesting assessment
of a technical foul? Isn't it
disloyal to treat your own
team worse than you would
treat an opponent?

Retreat:
THE RATTLER February 6,1980
Letter to the Editor
tell the coach about the rule
and ask him to follow it,
instead of asking him to be
publically humiliated by a
technical foul from the offi-
cials?
If she can excuse the
officials for not knowing the
rules perfectly, why was she
determined not to excuse the
coach? Why is only the coach
(who enforce the rules) not
"responsible for the rules we
play under", and the officials
responsible? Could there be
personal animosity?
