AT&T Communications of the Southwest, Inc. (“AT&T
Communications”), in accordance with the Public Utility
Regulatory Act and the rules of the Public Utility Commis-
sion of Texas (“PUC”) hereby gives notice of its intent to
implement a new schedule of rates for its services. The
new rates will be effective May 14,1985, unless otherwise
determined by the PUC. All customers and classes of
customers would be affected by the proposed rates.
AT&T Communications has filed a reprice of its tariffs
designed to more closely recover access and other costs
for WATS and 800 Service and all private line services in-
.cluding Channel Services, Foreign Exchange (FX),
DATAPHONE* Digital Service, and OCC Facilities.
Also proposed is the institution of a charge for Direc-
tory Assistance to begin to recover access costs incurred
for such service and increases in rates for operator
assisted AT&T Long Distance calls. The initial minute,
charge for all AT&T Long Distance calls and additional
minute rates for AT&T Long Distance calls 51 miles or
less are proposed for increases to reflect the access
charges approved by the PUC for such calls.
The proposed new rates for all services would result in
an increase in adjusted test period revenues of $139
million or 12.7 percent.
A complete copy of the proposed tariffs are on file with
the Texas Public Utility Commission.
Persons who wish to intervene or otherwise participate
in these proceedings should notify the Commission as
soon as possible. A request to intervene or participate or
for further information should be mailed to the Public
Utility Commission of Texas, 7800 Shoal Creek Blvd.,
Suite 400N, Austin, Texas 78757. Further information also
may be obtained by calling the Public Utility Commission
Consumer Affairs Division at (512) 458-0223 or (512)

Doris Lessing was a novelist and as such was a huge success.
She had written 25 books in alL It was the richness of her im”
agination which produced 'The Summer Before the Dark"and
'The Golden Notebook" and 'The Grass is Singing?
Her five-novel series 'The Children of Violence "had sold nearly
a million copies. So she was widely read and consequently was
widely interviewed.
Few authors anywhere had been as frequently mentioned as a
candidate for the Nobel Prize in literature.
And then one day something went wrong, as though the Doris
Lessing magic was suddenly snuffed out.
She was 61 when she wrote 'The Diary of a Good-Neighbor?
Logically she had every reason to expect another in a long string
of literary successes.
The story was strong. The writing was good. Maybe great.
With characteristic craftsmanship Doris pruned and polished un-
til her youngest word-child was prepared to walk cn its own.
But this is THE REST OF THE STORY. . .
Doris took the completed novel to her publisher, Jonathan Cape
- - the same publisher with whom she had been associated for
years. Yet despite their past triumphs together, Cape turned Deris
down.
'Hated"the novel, he said.
The author was shocked and hurt by this unexpected rejection,
but Refused to alter one comma of the manuscript. Instead Doris
sent it to her paperback publisher, Granada. Surely they would
accept it, she thought. . n
But Granada's reaction was equally negative. 'Too depressing ,
an editor said.
It was argued that how depressing a book was or was not should
have nothing to do with its literary merits. But Doris' argument
was received with rescinding indifference. Try someone else,
the publisher suggested.
Will, Doris did manage to find another publisher and to get
her novel published That was about all she managed to do.
Critics m°stly ignored the book. And so did readers. Fewer
than 2,000 copies were sold.
Astonished and fearing that perhaps she had lost her literary
