Dear Florence:
May I tell you how grateful we are
for your presentation of the set of
“Views of the Biblical World,” which
the Confirmation Class is presenting to
our Library.
It is a very thoughtful and a very
valuable acquisition, and will undoubt-
edly bring much delight, instruction and
inspiration to both our children and
adults.
Thanking you again and with kind-
est regards to your lovely family and to
the Committee, I am
Yours sincerely,
William S. Malev

OUR AMBASSADORS
We are very grateful to many of our
neighboring churches for their eager-
ness to learn about the traditions and
ideals of our faith. We are even more
grateful to those of our laymen who,
with a sense of deep consecration and
with a profound knowledge of our tradi-
tion, understake assignments to carry
the knowledge of Judaism to these
churches.
We especially want to single out men
like Melvin Dow, Dr. Isaac Dvoretzky,
Shimon Kushnir, and our Educational
Director, Joshua Weinstein, for the tact-
ful and expert way in which they have
carried the message of Judaism to our
neighbors. Dr. Marcus Levinson, Na-
tional Vice-President of the Zionist Or-
ganization, has been, of course, parti-
cularly effective in carrying the message
of Israel and Zion throughout our area.
Theirs is a sacred work, and we hope
that God will grant them the strength
to carry it forward with dignity and
with effectiveness.
BUY A JEWISH BOOK
We have been known throughout the
ages as the “People of the Book.” It was
a name given to us by Mohammed, the
founder of Islam, and it has truly char-
acterized our people throughout our his-
tory.
I am afraid, however, that we some-
times do not deserve that honorable title.
I visited Jewish homes where not a sin-
gle Jewish book was to be seen, not a
single object of Jewish interest, not a
Menorah or Mezuzah or a Bible. What
amazes me is how parents can hope that
their children will grow up to be good
Jews in that kind of non-Jewish and
non-religious environment.
Buy Jewish books! Buy them as gifts
for your children, for bar-mitzvah, for
confirmation, as wedding gifts. Give
membership certificates in the Jewish
Publication Society to members of your
family, so that they might get Jewish
books and read them, and thus get to
love their people and its faith. Above
all, get Jewish books for your home,
for nothing lends atmosphere, distinc-
tion, and Jewish pride to a home like
Jewish books.
While you are doing it, buy the other
necessary objects that make for Jewish
living—a new tallith for your husband,
your son or your father—a new pair of
tefillin for them all, so that they might
attend our Sunday morning Minyan at
Beth Yeshurun and be proud of what
they wear. Buy a new Menorah for
Chanukah, one that you can exhibit with
pride, and some Jewish pictures and art
objects from Israel that will bring the
spirit of that brave little democracy into
your home, and give your home Jewish
warmth and joy and pride.
Our Sisterhood Gift Shop is intended,
not only to raise funds for our Religious
School, although that in itself is a very
important purpose. Its real purpose is to
provide the Jews of our community with
an opportnity to make their homes, their
lives, and their children more distinctive-
ly, more proudly and more characteris-
tically Jewish. Take advantage of it!
WHEN YOU BELONG TO
THE SYNAGOGUE
You are identified with the oldest
institution that has survived the ruth-
less screening of the historic process.
You are not only identified with an
institution that has shown a genius
for survival, but which has consist-
ently put forth positive purpose for
surviving.
You belong to an institution which
expresses in majestic terms the yearn-
of your conscience.
You belong to an institution in which
you can express in warm, symbolic
words and forms the great stages in
your journey from birth to death.
You belong to a fellowship wherein
you can find friends that cut across
the boundaries of family, neighbor- ,
hood and occupation.
You belong to an institution where
your children can learn the history
and literature of Judaism, where they
can practice the precepts of their
faith in the company of other young
people.
You belong to an institution which
can help you become an informed
Jew. —Rabbi Jacob J. Weinstein
