in Israel and came to the United States
in 1944. Mrs. Arbisser was graduated
from Herzeliah Teachers Seminary in
New York and has a Bachelor of Arts
degree from the University of Maine.
She taught at the Community Hebrew
School of Bangor, Maine, at the Beth
Shalom Hebrew school and since 1960
has served in the capacity of Head
Teacher of the Afternoon Hebrew
School of Congregation Beth Shalom.
Again let us say a heartfelt “Wel-
come to Houston” and we are looking
forward to meeting Rafael, his lovely
Dvorah and their three children, Amir,
Iris and Ethan.

tion Beth Yeshurun is privileged to an-
nounce the appointment of Rafael I.
Arbisser as our Educational Director.
Mr. Arbisser will come to Houston in
July of this year and immediately as-
sume the duties as head of our Educa-
tional System.
We are proud to have obtained the
services of this nationally-known educa-
tor who comes to us from Congregation
Beth Shalom of Kansas City, which has
the largest family membership (1400
families) in the Central States Region
of the United Synagogues of America.
Rafael Arbisser was born in Tel-
Aviv, Israel, graduated from the Semi-
nar Lekibutzim in Tel-Aviv, graduated
from the Hebrew University in Jerusa-
lem, served in the Palmach and was
wounded and came to the United States
in 1946. He served as Principal of the
Community Hebrew School at Bangor,
Maine from 1949-51, and received his
Master of Education Degree from the
University of Maine at that time.
In 1951. Mr. Arbisser became the
Education Director of the Beth Shalom
Synagogue School and has seen the
combined schools (Nursery through
High School) grow in number from 600
to well over 1000 students. The after-
noon Hebrew School grew from 50
students to over 500 and in the High
School Department (post Bar/Bat Mitz-
vah students) 90% continue their Jew-
ish education with a minimum of 4
hours of class study per week. He or-
ganized the first Synagogue Day Camp
patterned after the Ramah program in
1955, and was instrumental in organiz-
ing and furthering a strong scholarship
program which sent dozens of children

an Annual Pilgrimage to
entire class of post-con-
firmands was conceived by Mr. Arbisser
and, as such, has successfully organized
these pilgrimages for the last five years.
This program as well as the vigorous
scholarship and Day Camp programs
have been used as models by many Con-
gregations in the Conservative move-
ment.
During his many years as Education
Director of Congregation Beth Shalom,
Arbisser served as the first chairman of
the Central States Region of the United
Synagogue Youth Commission, Chair-
man of the Central States Region Edu-
cation Commission, member of the Na-
tional Council on Jewish Education,
member of the Educators Assembly of
the United Synagogue of America (as
well as on its Board of Directors) and
taught Hebrew at the University of
Kansas City.

SPECIAL NOTICE
Mr. Rafael Arbisser, our new Education Director who will assume his
post at Beth Yeshurun on July 1, is making a special visit to Houston to
meet with some of the parents of our school children.
Meetings with all of the parents of our Hebrew School students will be
held on Wednesday, March 15, and with the 2nd and 3rd grades of our
Sunday Schools on Thursday, March 16. Both meetings will be held at 8
p.m. in the Synagogue Auditorium.
I am sure that you will want to attend to get acquainted with Mr.
Arbisser and hear of his plans for our Hebrew School and Sunday Schools
for the forthcoming year. Please reserve these dates.
