WHAT WE MEAN BY
BROTHERHOOD
Reading the Bible will in it-
self not satisfy the needs of our
faith; there must go with it the
proper interpretation and nec-
essary understanding.

of their college work in Israel. To com-
plete the roster, there were Israeli un-
dergraduates, taking their baccalau-
reate degrees at the Hebrew University,
and pursuing their Jewish studies at
the Center.
In addition to its academic aspects,
the American Student Center has be-
come the Jerusalem home of the Con-

Youth groups in the United States have
long been ardent supporters of the
Seminary’s Israeli institutions — now
they are able to visit the Center, and
see with their own eyes what they have
been valiantly supporting with their
Building Spiritual Bridges Program.
These vital programs in Israel — as
well as a score of others throughout
the United States and Canada — are
made possible through regular support
of the National Enrollment Plan. When
a congregation institutes NEP, and
members include their annual dues for
Seminary membership, they are direct-
ly helping the Seminary maintain its
manifold programs of Torah and learn-
ing. They are also widening the fron-
tiers of service the Seminary and United
Synagogue can offer people looking for
a relevant faith in today’s troubled
world.

Know Your Seminary —
The Seminary In Israel
Torah, scholarship and learning, the
mainstays of Judaism, are central in
the endeavor to preserve in Israel to-
day the spirit which preserved the Jews
throughout the centuries of exile and
wandering. One function of study in
Israel is the part it plays in drawing
Jewish communities of the Diaspora
closer to Zion.
Thus, the two institutions maintain-
ed by The Jewish Theological, Semi-
nary of America in Israel, are import-
ant to Jews everywhere.
The Schocken Institute of Jewish Re-
search on Balfour Street in Jerusalem,
houses an extraordinary collection of
manuscripts and early texts. Scholars
from all parts of the world travel to it
to use its resources, and to participate
in its research institutes. Selected young-
scholars, designated as fellows, pursue
their studies at the Institute. To its
neighbors in Jerusalem, and to visitors
from all over the world, the Schocken
Institute is known for its exhibitions
of beautiful books and manuscripts, and
for its lectures, which afford the edu-
cated public frequent and illuminating
glimpses into the world of scholarship.
At another level, the Seminary is
represented in Israel by its own stu-
dents, living and working at the Amer-
ican Student Center on Neve Schechter
in Jerusalem. In the season just past,
35 students were in residence at this
academic institution. Some were rabbi-
nical students, within a year of com-
pleting their professional training; some
were students preparing to enter the
Seminary’s Rabbinical Department; oth-
Sisterhood Gift Shop
Sisterhood would like to take this
means to thank the many, many people
responsible for a successful Hanukah
gift sale. The women who came and
unpacked cartons of merchandise and
set up the display tables were truly help-
ful beyond the call of duty and we can-
not express our gratitude enough. Of
course, our special thanks go to our
super-human Gift Shop Chairman, Mrs.
Esther Rosenberg, who is indispensable.
No matter how many Indians there are,
there has to be a Chief and she un-
doubterly is that! Of all the things in
life that are questionable, one thing
is certain: Mrs. Rosenberg will be on
the job! We wish to thank her able
sales staff who work every week, not
just during Hanukah season. To the
other unsung workers we might have
failed to thank personally, please ac-
cept this as our sincerest vote of grati-
tude.
The month of February has been set
aside as Brotherhood Month, and Beth
Yeshurun is very anxious to have all of
our members and friends take advan-
tage of the opportunity it offers to be
involved in brotherhood activity.
We are going to have several events
that will mark our loyalty to the ideal
of brotherhood:
On Friday evening, February
16th, we shall celebrate our An-
nual Brotherhood Service, at which
Dr. Alfred Taylor, of the Bellaire
Presbyterian Church, will be our
guest speaker. Dr. Taylor is the
president of the Bellaire Minis-
terial Association.

On Tuesday evening, February
20th, our Men’s Club will have
its Annual Brotherhood Dinner,
at which the Bethany Christian
Church and others of
bors, will be our guests.
¥ ¥
This should be
every one of us to implement the ideal
of brotherhood in a very concrete and
genuine manner. It is not enough just
to speak of brotherhood. We should
make a personal and a serious effort
to get our non-Jewish friends to attend
these two events. It is bettei’ to invite
them personally as our guests, and
even bring them with us to the Fri-
day evening service and the Men’s Club
dinner.
Every member and friend of Beth
Yeshurun should consider it a special
privilege to bring the non-Jews with
whom he is involved as a member, as
a business associate, or as a friend, to
Beth Yeshurun, to show them the
beauty of our Sanctuary and our audi-
torium, to explain to them the mean-
ing of the symbols and sacred objects
of our faith, and to make him feel at
home in the synagogue.
To do this is not only to make them
better friends of ours, but also to in-
spire them with a greater love and ad-
miration for our people and our faith.
Make this month truly a Brother-
hood Month by bringing some of your
non-Jewish friends to Beth Yeshurun
and giviing them a unique opportunity
to develop an appreciation and a rever-
ence for Judaism and for the Jewish
people.
Who knows, but some day this act
of yours will pay rich dividends, not
only to you personally and to your
family, but to all of our Jewish com-
munity.
