Miss Shelia Turberville of Weslaco, Texas,
our new Hillel and Sabbath School Princi-
pal. A 1970 graduate of University of
Texas with a major in English and a second
major in Hebrew. Shelia was very active in
Hillel and won the Hillel key for her dedi-
cation. With a strong background in Young
Judaea activities, she is both knowledge-
able and talented in the field of Jewish
folk songs and Chasidic music. From the
fall of 1970 till 1972 she worked on a
kibbutz in Israel and was concerned mainly
with the children. At Beth Yeshurun, in
addition to her duties in the Hillel and
Sabbath Schools she'll also be teaching
Hebrew in the Day School mornings and in
the Hebrew School in the afternoons.
Welcome, Shelia.

PARENTS! How is your Judaism!
Are your facts shaky?

If your youngster is about to begin his or
her first experience in formal Jewish education
..whether in the Beth Hayeled Pre-First, the
first grade of the Day School, or Beginners'
class in Hebrew School..then, it's time to pre-
pare yourself to be a more knowledgeable Jewish
parent.
How can you do it? Well, at Beth Yeshurun
for the third year, it's P.O.P.E.Y.E. to the
rescue! Our P.O.P.E.Y.E. (the sailor) isn't
nautical, but it is a pleasant, enjoyable way
to get a thorough introduction to Judaism and
the Jewish way of life. That's because those
six letters stand for "Parents' Opportunity
Program Enriching Yiddishkeit Education", and
it's a program especially designed for the
parents of new students in our Religious
Schools.
The first introductory meeting will be
held this Thursday, August 2 from 8:00 to
9:00 P.M. Rabbi Segal urges all concerned
parents to attend and prove to their youngsters
that Judaism isn't just a job for kids.. .it's
a happy family affair!
All couples scheduled to be married through
Beth Yeshurun during 1973 are invited to attend
Rabbi Segal's talk on Jewish marriage to be held
at Beth Yeshurun Thursday, August 9 at 8 P.M.
The purpose of this special class is to
acquaint soon-to-be brides and grooms with Jew-
ish wedding traditions and with rituals that
make the ceremony more meaningful. The Ketubah,
or marriage contract, will be fully explained,
as well as such customs as the breaking of the
wine glass, the Chupah, or marriage canopy, the
special words of the marriage vows, and the many
other traditions that give a Jewish wedding a
very special beauty and significance.
Rabbi Segal will, of course, meet indivi-
dually with each couple at a later date prior
to their weddings, but don't miss the unique
pleasure of sharing with other couples this
stimulating and informative lecture on the tradi-
tions of Jewish marriage.
