day, September 19, in the Choir Room at Beth
Yeshurun. This new group is being organized
for the purpose of teaching the traditional
chants and melodies of the Shabbat service to
women who desire to learn more about the ser-
vice, so that they might become more active
participants in Shabbat services.
Selma anticipates that this year's
Sisterhood Sabbath will be led by the members
of this new group. She also emphasized that
a knowledge of Hebrew is not essential to
becoming a member of the group.
Selma will be assisted by Frances (Mrs.
Marvin) Kaplan as co-chairman. Those women
interested in joining the group are invited
to attend the first meeting September 12,
9:30 a.m. Anyone desiring further information
may call Selma Segal, 723-2427 or Frances
Kaplan, 665-2747.
A guest rabbi will oreach sermons on the
second evening (Thursday) and the second day
(Friday) of Rosh Hashanah. The guest sermon-
izer, Rabbi Louis Levitsky, is recently re-
tired after 33 years as the senior rabbi of
the largest Conservative synagogue in Newark,
New Jersey.
Besides giving the above Rosh Hashanah
sermons, Rabbi Levitsky will also preach in
the main sanctuary September 29, (Shabbat,
Shuvah) in the morning, and in the chapel for
the Koi Nidre service, Friday, October 5. His
final sermon for this year's High Holy Days
will be Saturday morning, October 6 in the
main sanctuary. According to Rabbi Segal, the
congregation will enjoy the guest rabbi who is
an "extremely dynamic and powerful orator."
Selma (Mrs. Nathan) Segal, chairman of
the new group of Sisterhood "chanters", is
uniquely qualified to lead such a group not
only by her extensive musical background and
training but also by her wide knowledge of
the liturgy. For the past three years, Selma
has had total responsibility for the planning
of Sisterhood Sabbaths and the training of the
women who took part in them.
She has announced the time and place of
the first two meetings will be 9:30 a.m.\ Wed-
nesday, September 12, and 9:30 a.m., Wednes-
