WHY BRAILLE
"You help me to narrow the gap between all that I used to do
and what I am trying to do again.”
This is what a Braillist does for a blind person. This is what
you can do, if you will learn to type Braille for one who needs
you, such as:
A Premature Baby born blind;
A Youth with his vision impaired
accident;
A Man or Woman whose sight is affected by diabetes:
An Elderly Mother or Father subject to the visual hazards of
old age.
No matter who he or she is, or what the circumstances may
be, Braillists must exist to serve them.
The Betty Schwartz Braille Program of Sisterhood is now
accepting applications for the Fall. Please contact Harriet (Mrs.
Alan) Aaronson at 774-7090 for further information.

Rafael Arbisser, Mrs. Malev
school donors honored March 24
The carpet was finally laid, the paint, in its wide-awake
bright shades was dry, books were shelved and the William
S. Male^School for Religious Studies was formally opened
Sunday, March 24, with an address by Gerson Cohen, Chancellor
of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the presentation of
mezgzot to donors of the school who then, in separate rituals,
affixed them to the doors of the various areas of the school.
The song Mah Tovu by the choirs began the afternoon.
A surprise presentation at the March 24 Dedication of the
William S. Malev School was a certificate that went to Rafael
Arbisser, Educational Director, for his devoted planning on
behalf of the school. The certificate will be posted when
the proper lighting is secured, and the congregation may read
the sentiments it expresses at that time.
In the ceremony, torahs were placed in the two school chapels.
Melvin Dow, vice president and chairman of the Education
Committee, and past presidents David Barg and Herbert Lauf-
man presented the mezuzot to donors in the Great Sanctuary.
Rabbi Segal introduced the speaker for the afternoon whose
topic was "How Shall We Answer?”
Dr. Cohen began his talk by commenting that he spent
part of his educational career with Rabbi Malev at the Jamaica
Center in New York. He compared the rabbi to Moses who
paved the way for the Israelites, but who was unable to see the
work of his hands.
Further remarks of Chancellor Cohen included:
"The function of a school is provide answers ...”
"A school is only as powerful as its partnership with parents,
the community and its students.”
"This is a gorgeous edifice.” "However, great systems of
education developed out of poverty and penury.”
The chancellor, 30 years younger than his predecessor at
JTS, has been in Jewish education all his life. However, Dr.
Irving Brodkin, Director of Development at JTS, noted that the
rabbi also has a deep interest in music and a great appreciation
for sports. He is the first in his position to appoint a woman to
the JTS faculty. She is Judy Hauptman, a Talmud instructor
at Teacher’s Institute.
