Rabbi’s Corner
This past week I was literally astounded when I read
the October 15th headline in The Houston Post: “Guerrilla
Group Wins in U.N. Vote.” The article following that head-
line indicated how by an overwhelming vote of 105 to 4 the
General Assembly voted to invite the Palestine Liberation
Organization (PLO) to take part in a debate on Palestine
in the General Assembly. Only Israel, the United States,
Bolivia, and the Dominican Republic voted against the
resolution. The debate was expected to last for two weeks
and Yasir Arafat, the PLO chief, was expected to attend.
I was astounded and overwhelmed because it seems
that the entire world (except the U.S. and a small handful
of other nations) really does not care what happens to
Israel. It seems as if the entire world wants to hear no
evil, see no evil - but is very willing to speak plenty of
evil. It seems as if the world wants to close its eyes to
the terrorist events of the past few years. The oil crisis
is so severe that the world is willing to prostitute itself
and invite murderers into its “living room” to be treated
like gentlemen.
During the past few years the leadership of the PLO,
and this also includes its so-called moderate leaders, has
proudly claimed responsibility for the mass murders at Lod
Airport, the eleven killed at the Munich Olympic Games in
1972, the cold blooded murder of three diplomats (two of
them American) in Khartoum in 1973, the murders at Kiryat
Shemona, and the massacre of 24 children in Ma’alot this
year. It is obvious that the United Nations is closing its
eyes to these acts of fanaticism. Otherwise, how could it
invite these people to its international chambers? Does it
not believe in the old maxim, “He who lies down with dogs
will wake up with fleas”?
On many occasions the officials of the PLO have stated
the primary purpose of its existence - the destruction of
the State of Israel. In fact as late as June 8, 1974 the
PLO stated that it was opposed to any form of recognition
of Israel. True, there are splinter groups in the PLO but
they differ only in regard to the tactics to be employed to
destroy Israel, but not the general goal. They all believe
that Israel must be destroyed.
I personally wonder what the United Nations would
state if a move came forth to invite the Mafia, or some
other similar organization, to speak at the U.N. All this
does is give respectability to a group of cutthroats - and
that is all the PLO really is. All this does is merely
encourage murderers and blackmailers to continue their
operations. It indicates to these murderers that if you kill,
even in cold blood, enough innocent people you will
achieve your goal.
However, by now the peoples of the world should have
realized that the only way to curtail the mass murder of
innocent people is not by recognizing the terrorists but
rather by refusing to make concessions. When Cuba was
granting asylum to plane hijackers, it wasn’t safe to travel
on an American plane. Only since these hijackers learned
that asylum was no longer positive have we experienced
fewer hijackings of American planes. You cannot play soft
with mass murderers.
RABBI SEGAL (Continued)
Secondly, the PLO claims to be “the sole representa-
tive of the Palestinian people.” However, this title is self
conferred. Most Palestinians living in Jordan, the West
Bank and the Gaza Strip refuse to accept this title. The
PLO has even attempted to terrorize the Palestinians
living in these areas by murdering them too.
What does all this indicate? It indicates a difficult
future for Israel but, unfortunately, it also indicates the
moral corruption of vast numbers of nations in this world.
The people whom they would be ashamed to invite into
their own personal homes are now being officially invited
into the chambers of the United Nations. Unfortunately,
once again, the U.N. has morally degraded itself.
