Henderson and Hallsville
have the No. 1 and No. 2-ranked
offensive and defensive units in
the circuit, making it extremely
tough to play a possession con-
trol game with diein.
Alexander hasn't had the Li-
ons in the playoffs for the last
three seasons, a long drought
that's about to come to an end.
The Lions are already as-
„ sured a playoff berth, ifs die ti-
tle they want outright and that's
an attitude that should make
them lord of the jungle Friday.
Ifs the oldest rivalry in
Carthage's history (dating back
to 1939), with the Lions holding
a 26-22-2 lead.
However, the momentum of
that victory was lost Friday in
Longview when Carthage
couldn't defend a 22-8 halftime
advantage and lost 36-28.
* Mathematically there's still a
way for the Dawgs to reach the
playoffs, but realistically it
won't happen.
Henderson is the best team in
the district. Hallsville is the sec-
ond best Kilgore may not be
much better than Carthage, but
those are the playoff clubs if ev-
erything goes according to
Hoyle.
Friday's encounter pits die
Carthage secondary against
Henderson QB Drew Coleman
in a mismatch.
In the Lions' 2S-7 win over
Whitehouse last week, Coleman
was 10 for 20 for 225 yards and
two touchdowns, and he caught
a pass from Austin Adams for
25 yards and another Lions'
tally.
With 1,481 yards passing this
season. Coleman has a sizeable
lead over Kilgore's Davon Vin-
son (1,139) and Carthage's
Micah Cockrell (1,014) and no
doubt Henderson bossman Den-
nis Alexander will find a way
for die Lions' dandy to bum the
Carthage secondary.
The Dawgs will counter with
Cockrell, tailback Clinton
Graves and Coby Lewis trying
to improve on the numbers of
die lowest ranked offense in the
league.
Graves needs 287 yards in
his remaining games to reach
1,000. He is the most improved
player on the team and it will
not be an impossible task.
A lot depends on Cockrell,
Lewis and Corey Roberts. If
they can quick-start the attack

If Carthage can win out, it
will likely go to the state play-
offe.
Most likely Henderson will
put an end to such foolish, no-
tions here Friday, but if not the
Lions could be in a world of
hurt themselves in their quest
for the 16-AAAA district title.
With two games remaining in
regular season, Carthage (1-2)
has Henderson (3-0) and
Hallsville (2-1).
The Lions close out the sea-
son with Kilgore (2-1) in about
an exciting a finish as could be
devised, given that half of the
six-team district is going to
post-season action.
Carthage failed to make the
playoffs last fall and has won
just one game this year in the
Charles Leffall regime.
The Dawgs ended a seven-
game losing streak (dating back
to the final game of 1999 in
Henderson) when they toppled
Whitehouse two weeks ago.
