Seven 4-H'ers from Panola
County competed on Feb. 10 at
the District 5 4-H Food Show
held at the Student Union Center
at Stephen F. Austin State Uni-
versity.
Local participants included
Lani Griffin, Stormie Hillin,
Kelsey Goodwin, Brandt Good-
win, Regina Warrington, Kelsey
Norris and Kendra Norris.
Nearly 200 contestants from
20 East Texas counties attended
the show. A 4-H'er must place in
his or her county contest to go to
a district show. Winners from
the senior division district show
then compete in the statewide 4-
H Roundup at the Texas A&M
University campus in College
Station in June.

tractive, nutritious meals and
snacks. They also leam the so-
cial and cultural aspects of food.
As with any 4-H program, there
is a secondary teaching goal.
The Food Show helps them
leam public-speaking skills and
how to carry a project through
from start to finish. It also builds
self-esteem in the process.

sheriffs office again. As of to-
day, no one from the sheriffs of-
fice has come to the store.
All the businesses on South
Shelby Street and East Sabine
Street have been broken into. No
one had been arrested for these
crimes. We own one of the
largest sporting goods store in
East Texas. But we cannot stock
guns because of the criminals. I
would like to stock Honda four
wheelers but without protection
from the law enforcement, they
would be stolen in thirty days.
There is insurance on the
store for fire and storm, but
there is no insurance for theft
because of the risk. The insur-
ance company refuses to sell a
policy.
Thirty percent of the popula-
tion of Panola County live in the
city. These people do not have
protection from the criminals.

Dear Editor:
On Feb. 12, I met with the
Panola County Commissioners
Court to ask for help with the
law enforcement.
On Nov. 2, criminals de-
stroyed the- plate glass on the
store front. I called the sheriffs
department for help. They failed
to show up. On Nov. 16 crimi-
nals broke into my repair shops
and stole about $17,000 in out-
board motors and repair equip-
ment. When I called the sheriffs
department, I was told by a lady
there that they would not come
down because 1 was in the city
limits.
At 2 p.m. that afternoon I
went to the sheriffs office after
beating on the door which was
locked, a lady came out. She
asked what did I need. When I
told her I wanted to talk to the
sheriff about my store being
robbed, she in turn told me the
sheriffs department did not
work criminal cases in the city.
On Dec. 18 someone shot up
